The FCC has set decency standards for the limited amount of broadcast stations. What is wrong with this? Is it new?
Do you think that there should be no decency regulation at all for broadcast TV and radio?
I have a couple of problems with this. First, and foremost, it's vague. They don't specify what they consider indecent. However, from what's been going on lately, a nipple would probably warrant the maximum fine, while seeing someone's eye hanging by its optical nerve would be fine. Apparently, in the USA, nudity is more taboo than most people care about.
My second problem is the insane maximum of the fine. It's insane that such a large number should even be considered.
Third, the overly Christian pompous asses in the government are forcing their perogatives on us. This is probably coming from the same people that freak out over "sexual education" when it suggests anything except "abstinence." God forbid we mention condoms as protection. Go on a trip sometime, a good chunk of Europe thinks our whole outlook on sex-on-tv is insane. Meanwhile, they're horrified that we should as much violence as we do on tv. As a famous comic once said: "Lick a tit, it's rated X. Cut a tit off with a chainsaw, and it's PG-13."
Fourth, there are a lot more important things to be focusing on than this stupid thing. I mean, jeebus, emplyoment is still down, outsourcing is getting worse (though the current administration thinks it's GOOD for us), the crap going on in Iraq, and our practically "giving up" on al Queda. I'd like them to start focusing their attention on shit that really matters.
Lastly, this thing was attached to a friggin war bill, a bill to increase military spending during a time of war. I mean, WTF. Of COURSE the thing is going to get approved, who doesn't want to increase military spending when we're in a war in Iraq (and then going back to Afghanistan or wherever). That's just a sleezy thing to do; using the War to get a "moral decency" bill / whatever passed.
