BOOKS are going to be the death of Democracy. Most of the experts interviewed on various news programs are pushing a book, and an agenda.

What happened to the good old days when a reporter reported, and let the viewer decide based on facts not opinion.

I heard a funny definition of FACTS the other day, it went something like "a fact is what you have when you decide to stop investigating".

I guess were gonna have to wait about 20 years so we can find out what really happened on the history channel.

On Saturday June 26th I was watching a television show on G4Tv, the name of the show is PULSE.
This particular episode had an interview with Richard Garriott of Austin Texas. The interview consisted of a tour of his mansion
Britannia Manor.

During the interview Richard provides a tour of the grounds including several "secret rooms" (rooms with hidden entrances. In one of the rooms he points to several artifacts, (meteorites, shrunken heads etc) he is apparently a collector of bones.

What caught my attention was when he pointed to a shelf with a large brick on it. He points to the large brick and proceeds to describe it on camera, and I quote "this is a piece of the Great Wall of China that I SMUGGLED out of China".
He then laughs about it."-end sniptasticK

The fact that he has no children and a carousel out back has me a lil concerned as well.

Well said. I actually enjoyed Bowling For Columbine quite a bit and found it at least somewhat informative but lately Moore has been such a douche bag. Everytime he opens his mouth I like him less.

I'll still probably see Fahrenheit 9/11. But I'm going to be a bit skeptical. They've all got their agendas. George Bush, Michael Moore, Hitchens and Halsy. The truth lies somewhere between all the shit that is constantly spewed forth from these talking heads.

Lose it? I didn't lose it. It's not like, "Whoops! Where'd my job go?" I QUIT.

Yeah, I'm sure this Hitchens guy has an agenda of his own, wouldn't surprise me at all. Michael Moore has his as well. I guess what I wanted to say is that I don't trust any rich asshole who picks and chooses facts and arguments to push his view on you, regardless of his "side". Michael Moore is notorious for this. He doesn't care to call his movies documentaries when they're anything but. He hinged a lot of Bowling for Columbine on ambushing an old sick man (who may have well been evil, whatever, but that is a really poor way of making a real point). It's VERY easy to ambush idiots at Walmart, or old men at early stages of alzheimer's, and all his other stupid stunts that make his movies worthless as *documents*.
Yet people treat him as the paradigm of reason.
Comedy doesn't fuckign HELP. It's just like those people that think the Daily Show with Jon Stewart is somehow helping us. All it does is giggle and make snide remarks about events and people and never offers anything we can actually use. It sure makes people feel smart though - "haha look at the stupid politicians!".
I do understand that people who believe Michael Moore is a hero are, deep down, trying to help and have good intentions, but that doesn't mean Michael Moore makes great movies, is a great guy, or has great motivations. He is simply yet another asshole in this stupid vortex of shit we call politics, pushing the same bullshit tactics (lying, posing, posturing, presentation of selective truths, manipulation of weaker people, editing, stunts, etc.) as every other idiot on either side of the "political spectrum". It makes him no better than his counterparts on the opposite sides trying to also manipulate their followers, and that makes him just as worthless in my book.

I can agree with some degree of regulation, but far less than what is occurring now. The FCC won't even attempt to define what is "indecent", and so we have a policy that is utterly impossible to determine if you're on the right side of it or not. And, frankly, I'm a big fan of if you don't like it then turn it off. If you don't like your kids watching/listening to it, then take steps to show them not only that you don't want them doing so, but why. Too many parents are unwilling to do this though, and so want the government to police the airwaves for them -- and thus enforce their morals and ethics on others without their consent.

Just to add a little to this already great point. I don't like the fact that a body that has so much impact on what the public sees (the FCC) is not an elected group of officials. As far as I know there is no mechanism for the public to begin the process of removing someone from any government agency other than changing the overall administration. Even then the new administration can keep the existing players intact if the deem it appropriate.

The FCC also seems to have the ability to choose who they will fine willy nilly. On top of that, there seems to be no real method to their madness. Something that seems ok at one moment can become taboo the next?

The way in which these new fines were added to a military spending bill should be enough for most people to question the intentions of the people that added them. If this was so important and so many people 'desired' these new fines why did they need to tack it onto a totally unrelated bill that has a high chance of passing on it's own merits?

The FCC has set decency standards for the limited amount of broadcast stations. What is wrong with this? Is it new?

Do you think that there should be no decency regulation at all for broadcast TV and radio?

I have a couple of problems with this. First, and foremost, it's vague. They don't specify what they consider indecent. However, from what's been going on lately, a nipple would probably warrant the maximum fine, while seeing someone's eye hanging by its optical nerve would be fine. Apparently, in the USA, nudity is more taboo than most people care about.

My second problem is the insane maximum of the fine. It's insane that such a large number should even be considered.

Third, the overly Christian pompous asses in the government are forcing their perogatives on us. This is probably coming from the same people that freak out over "sexual education" when it suggests anything except "abstinence." God forbid we mention condoms as protection. Go on a trip sometime, a good chunk of Europe thinks our whole outlook on sex-on-tv is insane. Meanwhile, they're horrified that we should as much violence as we do on tv. As a famous comic once said: "Lick a tit, it's rated X. Cut a tit off with a chainsaw, and it's PG-13."

Fourth, there are a lot more important things to be focusing on than this stupid thing. I mean, jeebus, emplyoment is still down, outsourcing is getting worse (though the current administration thinks it's GOOD for us), the crap going on in Iraq, and our practically "giving up" on al Queda. I'd like them to start focusing their attention on shit that really matters.

Lastly, this thing was attached to a friggin war bill, a bill to increase military spending during a time of war. I mean, WTF. Of COURSE the thing is going to get approved, who doesn't want to increase military spending when we're in a war in Iraq (and then going back to Afghanistan or wherever). That's just a sleezy thing to do; using the War to get a "moral decency" bill / whatever passed.

Ok, conglomerating a bunch of replies into one here...

terrapin:
And Michael Moore doesn't lie. Yes, he picks and chooses facts for his purpose, and places emphasis on those that support his arguments, and he states a lot of opinions

Not entirely correct. Mr. Moore has made some factually incorrect statements before in his films. In Bowling for Columbine he claimed that a plaque at the US Air Force Acadamy "proudly proclaims that the plane killed Vietnamese people on Christmas Eve of 1972. It was the largest bombing campaign of the Vietnam War." (the DVD version of the film takes this even further, rather than revising it closer to the truth).

The actual plaque inscription is available here (and no, I'm not endorsing this site, but it came up on a Google search): http://www.bowlingfortruth.com/bowlingforcolumbine/scenes/planeplaque.htm

There have been other issues with BFC in particular, namely some very dodgy editing that misrepresents positions and timelines. While he may have won an Oscar for it, I suspect that it's not his best film.

That said, Moore has stated that he's had a far larger number of fact checkers go over Fahrenheit 911 to ensure accuracy. Yes, there's still going to be bias, and it will be up to the viewers to find the "rest of the truth" in some cases, but he may've learned a lesson from some of the issues regarding BFC.

L.F. Nights:
Everyone knows that the Bushes, the Bin Ladens and the Saudi royals have close ties

Actually, I suspect less than 30% of the populace knows of the ties in any detail. Do you know them? No googling or checking other references. There's a wide gap between someone saying "yeah, they're old buddies" and actually showing a long term, mutually beneficial relationship that affects policy. F911 is probably the first "mainstream" work showing this.

Jensen:
The FCC has set decency standards for the limited amount of broadcast stations. What is wrong with this? Is it new?

Actually, yes it is new. The FCC has largely allowed indecency claims to slide unless they were particularly egregious. Now they're prosecuting every little thing... if they don't like you. The prosecution is by no means even handed -- Howard Stern is being cited while Oprah is not. I would agree that Oprah crosses (or comes near) the line far less often than Stern, but if you're going to set out a policy such as this then you'd better enforce it even handedly. That's not happening.

Do you think that there should be no decency regulation at all for broadcast TV and radio?

So is/was Wednesday or Thursday your birthday?

Happy Birthday!

It's today - and thanks.

You mean like the "Star Trek movie even-odd principle"?

Well, turning 20, 30, 40, etc. is a "milestone" birthday, 21 is obviously big and I've always thought of 31 or 41 as meaning, "I'm now officially in my 30's or 40's - crap". But now I'm already in my 40's, my next semi-milestone birthday, 45, is still three years away, so... meh.

Later, off to work!

To celebrate my birthday today I'm going to work for 12 hours or so - maybe more! You know, I've just come to the conclusion that birthdays that end in a "2" are the least significant in a person's life, emotionally speaking. Except maybe 12, when every birthday is a big deal, who ever cared about turning 22, 32, 42 () etc?

Some titles that come to mind:

Ah! My Goddess! (classic, charming)
Akira (classic, action, thoughtful)
Arjuna (hippy, thoughtful, poignant)
Bastard! (nostalgic factor - probably not very good)
Bubblegum Crisis (classic, action - new series sucks outright)
Boogiepope Phantom (quirky)
Cowboy Bebop (action - fairly current, easy to get into)
Excel Saga (way, way over the top - only for nUrdy anime fans)
FLCL (quirky, comedic)
Ghost in the Shell (action, sci-fi, semi-thoughtful)
Grave of the Fireflies (classic, thoughtful, poignant)
Haibane Renmae (thoughtful, charming)
Heat Guy J (poor man's Cowboy Bebop)
Hellsing (shallow, action/gothic type)
Jin-Roh (thoughtful, dramatic)
Last Exile (action, charming - current release)
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (comedy/quirky/thoughtful)
Najica Blitz Tactics (only funny for being so wrong)
Neon Genesis Evangelio (my personal favorite - long live Ayanami)
Princess Mononoke (action, thoughtful, poignant)
Record of Lodoss War (classic, action, fantastical)
Serial Experiments: Lain (quirky, thoughtful)
Spirited Away (charming)
Trigun (action)
Totoro (youthful, charming - current DVD sucks, Disney DVD will be better)
Vampire Hunter D (classic, action, gothic)

Otherwise, a lot of it is subjective to personal tastest and/or nostalgia. I never watched Robotech much as a kid and, looking at it now, I cannot help but think of how badly it sucks (much like how I love Tron from way back when, but my friends and associates wonder what in the heck I am talking about.)

There are a lot of good, yet not great or semi-generic releases, too. This would cover anything from the Love Hinas to the Gundams and everything in between. There are many more eclectic titles as well - things like Cat Soup or Doggy Poo.

Currently, nothing is blowing me away. I am really enjoying Last Exile, but I would not consider it great. I am eagerly awaiting Wolf's Rain; I am hoping it is as good as it seems it could be. Alternately, I love the original Ghost in the Shell and am looking forward to, when it is released, Innocence and, late next month, the release of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. Otherwise, I am really enjoying the pointlessness of Azumanga Daioh.

I cannot think of the name offhand...but I want to check out the one with the alien frog commander that is stranded on Earth. I do enjoy Big O, both series, but I cannot honestly tell you that it is a good series - I keep on hoping the story will be better than it is and I do have a fondness for the mixture of the former animated Batman series and anime.

Give Cowboy Bebop a whirl, though - it is really good and would be very easy to get into based upon its action and coolness content. Akira is a great classic and I absolutely love Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it may be a bit heavy for a new anime fan.

Incredibly let down by Witch Hunter Robin,
Ray

Edit: Added one title.
