Maybe if Carmack could make a decent game ppl would be more fond of it. Yeah bring it on so ppl can get over it cause it ain't gonna be that great. I just want the hype to end, period. It's gotten more attention than it deserves due to 1 man being involved who is treated better than he deserves. In regards to Rage3d, it is fairly busy with lots of discussion(yes some of it driver issue but hardly the majority) and ATI's drivers are perfectly fine and have been for some time(assuming you know what you are doing)
I think a lot of people like Carmack's games. DOOM is still viewed as one of the best games of all time, and that's not just because it was revolutionary.
Also, Carmack isn't treated well enough in my opinion. The guy invented FPS games (yes, I know Ultima had the first person view before Carmack came along, but it wasn't a shooter), then he invented online deathmatch, and then he developed engine after engine that single-handedly drove the hardware industry to create bigger and faster chips so they could show how much faster they ran Carmack's games than anyone else.
And then there are the games that were developed on Carmack's technology. Shall i list them for you?
Heretic
Hexen
Strife
SiN
Half-Life
Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2
Heretic 2
Hexen 2
Kingpin
Anachronox
Soldier of Fortune
Soldier of Fortune 2
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Jedi Acadamy
American McGee's Alice
Call of Duty
Medal of Honor
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Counter-Strike (it is a retail product)
Daikatana (I don't know why I'm even mentioning this)
KISS Psycho Circus
The guy deserves a lot of credit. Between his rendering engines and his network code, he has driven the industry to new heights.
From an economics standpoint, Carmack and his technologies have been huge.
