Aye, it would just be another 3DO at that level.

I could certainly see a $350 price tag if one of them thought they could greatly outperform the other two or come out much, much earlier with a hit game.

Otherwise, I would only consider that price tag anywhere near realistic if it was not based on the standard model, but on some super 1337 TiVo/DVDR/MP3/VCR/Fountain of Yout version of the system.

Thinking a dome screen would have much suckage,

I know I remember reading about Sony planning 2 versions of the PS3. One was the standard no frills console much like the current design of the PS2, while the other was a "server" version (I think that was their terminology) that had the TIVO features and all that sort of thing.

Let's give Sony a little credit here; they know (or darn well should) consoles don't sell worth crap above the $300 price point. They'd be crazy to release the standard version above that.

no backwards compatability would be a huge mistake for microsoft with the next xbos.. i think thats one of the reasons ps2 did so well is people were able to buy it and have the option of playing their old games, or buying older games that they hadnt played for really cheap..

Another article decided that the PSX was created as a stopgap to the PS3 that would allow Sony to *avoid* including greater multimedia capabilities in the PS3, thereby reducing the price at launch and probably undercutting the Xbox2. To be honest, between the drop in price of a PSX by then + a reduced cost PS3 from not doing it, I'd say that strategy could put them well ahead of an expensive XBox2 launch, especially if it isn't backward compatible (XBox2 with the Xbox).

I think that was a slightly more sensible conclusion than the one at the beginning of that article, personally.

The PS2 was $299 at launch here in the US. At $500, I doubt that I would buy a PS3 at launch and I am a classic early adopter gamer. I would imagine that most early adopting gamers feel the same way and Sony will have a hard time selling the PS3 for > $300.

This guy in the article says that tivo and DVD writing will be included in PS3 and thats what will drive up the price. I highly doubt that these functions will be part of the PS3. Most of us don't want or need that stuff in a console. I already have a DVD writer and don't watch much tv.

Built in wireless and broadband are a must but the tech that makes these possible is so cheap that I doubt it would raise Sony's manufacturing costs more than a couple of bucks per unit.

the idiot was just guessing the price of the console. Who cares, any fool can guess. We know he'll be wrong.

Isn't $500 dollars not that far off what the PS2 debued at anyway? Not an American so dont know the exact figures... But guessing was around $400 dollars.

Given that Sony's strategy for the standard PS3 needs a harddrive as they cant possibly stream the content constantly it has to be stored locally once downloaded.

Also I thought Sony is looking at many different spec options for the PS3 making any pricing guesses at this stage pointless given they could well do a 'cheap' PS3 that is just 1 cell chip and a DVD drive, while the proper has 2/4 Cells, DVD drive and Hard Drive, etc.... is all just pure speculation at the moment given its probably so far out till even the working prototype is complete.
