Snowblind == Deus Ex: Clan Wars

Snowblind was Deus Ex Clan Wars on GameSpot has the revelation that Snowblind, the first-person action game in the works at Crystal Dynamics that was subtly unveiled at this year's E3 (story) actually began its virtual life as the project known as Deus Ex: Clan Wars. Here's word on the project's origins, and why it changed course:
As it turns out, the similarities between Snowblind and Deus Ex are no coincidence. Sources close to the game's development confirmed today that the game began as Deus Ex: Clan Wars, the tactical "Deus Ex 'Action' game" mentioned in an Eidos financial report in April. "It did begin as Clan Wars," they said, "but it began to take a direction of its own."

Snowblind's "direction" falls somewhere between LucasArts' Mercenaries and Io Interactive's Freedom Fighters. Its setting is a massive civil war inside a collapsed Asian communist country (China, in this case), and will feature large levels that provide for free-roaming and fast-paced action. In the game's single-player campaign, players will lead a squad of AI-controlled NPC commandos which they must protect and heal in return for their service in combat. The game will also feature drivable vehicles, including several mech-esque contraptions.

I have no concept of time, maybe it was 3 weeks, lol.

But, wouldn't mass layoffs and Warren Spector not wanting to get shoved into CD(Even though all this was denied) confirm with what is happening here?

The rumors I'm familiar with are that there were mass layoffs at Ion and that Warren Spector left of his own volition, but that was news about 3 weeks ago. What happened last week?

It looks liked Eidos is collapsing it's studios and putting them into Crystal Dynamics, which may eventually just become a inhouse Eidos studio, which is pretty much already is.

Which probably means they are closing Ion Storm as well, which would follow the rumors of last week. Some personel may be transfered over there; so, again, following rumors last week, Warren Spector will either leave or go work at CD.

Just a guess, but I can see it happening.

To think, what Deus Ex: IW could have been, if only it used CryTek -OR- ditched the X-Bocks. Sigh

Truthfully I haven't played Far Cry, but the pun remains try, it was a far cry from best of the year thus far.

And it's true, Bloodlines cannot be released before HL2.

Yeah, I'm sure ethics are right at the top of Valve's mission statement. I'm surprised to hear Activision says Bloodlines will be released with or without HL2 on the market... I'd also had the impression that there was an agreement saying no Bloodlines until HL2.

I don't know about that, Kaptin. I don't think Valve can hold them to such an agreement. If that were the case, it may very well spell disaster for every Source (announced and unannounced) game currently in development, especially if Valve decides to postpone the game by another two years.

Shane DeFreest of Activision said that Vampire: bloodlines will be released on time this year no matter what Valve decides to do, so I don't think Valve has any right to be the first Source game out and force everyone else to suspend their titles - it wouldn't be ethical and they'd have to pay those companies a lot of money for the forced extensions.

In any case, VTM: Bloodlines is coming, which is looking an awful lot like a spiritual successor to Deus Ex.

Sure it's coming... We just have to wait for the genuises at Valve to finally finish HL2 so they can be the first Source game out.

At least the most recent screenshots are starting to look respectable

Bloodlines and Stalker are going to bring gaming back to the PC. I don't care much for Doom 3, though - having played a bit of the beta, it seems rather boring.

If Half Life 2 comes out any time this year, we'll get that as well.

Deus Ex: IW was by far the worst triple-A title FPS this year. Painkiller beats by a mile, and Painkiller isn't too great, either. I hope that whoever called it the best FPS of the year was being sarcastic, because it was the absolute opposite of 'best'.

Is it any surprise that Eidos is taking Deus Ex out back and raping it mercilessly? After the recent firings at Ion Storm, I have no question about their intentions to drive their games completely towards the console market. What's worse is how they're focusing on dumbed-down 'action' games (read: gauntlet-simplicity) instead of smarter ones like Pandora Tomorrow and Beyond Good and Evil like Ubisoft.

Man I'd hate to be the designer behind this game...
Not only does it sound lame... but it's going to be known as the spiritual successor?
What a load...
Cross between Mercenaries and FreeFighters? Neat... but I'm not interested in the asian setting.
I feel the same about that new game, Seven Samurai 20XX.
What a load...

I only played FarCry untill you steal a boat (right before the demo level I think). The story wasn't interesting in the least, the gameplay fell pretty generic.

The farthest I ever got was The Boat level, about two thirds of the way through. Unless the story dramatically picks up during the last few levels they may as well not even bothered, it's so thread bare as to be virtually nonexistant.

Far Cry doesn't take place in corridors (at least some of the levels), it's really pretty, and the enemies are a little smarter than usual. Other than that there's not a whole heck of a lot to write home about.

Pssst, the year's far from finished.

Fun; yes. Good; yes. Great; better luck next time.

The icon is still on my desktop and I may continue playing it sometime. By the way, did they release a patch that enable quickload/quicksave without console command/buggy workaround?

Psht, it was a far cry from best.

Am I the only one who couldn't get in to Far Cry? It's a nice tech demo but next time I'd like a little bit of a game to go along with it.
