Out of the Blue

I was checking to make sure TiVO was set to catch the Deadwood season finale tonight (it still hasn't sunk in The Sopranos is over for the season), and with a quick pop, the audio went. Some checking seems to isolate the problem to my receiver, so I need to check and see if hopefully this may just be a blown fuse. I have fears that it goes beyond that, as there was a distinctive smell following this that seems very familiar as fried circuitry, so it may be a goner.

The moment we start lumping average people into certain groups ("This guy signed up, so he's probably ok. But that guy in the other line? He looks shifty."), it becomes a very slippery slope...

This isn't just a case of "signing up", these background checks are very thorough - and yes, you'd better not have anything to hide if you choose to have this done.

I think it might also create an "us vs. them" mentality between normal US citizens. You'd have those who willingly agreed to share their information with the government (AND pay a yearly fee) and those that chose not to.

Another thing you have to consider is that this isn't new, there are probably tens of thousands of occupations that already require background checks like these and I for one am glad of it. Think of all the people who work in nuclear plants, labs, and other potential disaster sites who have to be as trustworthy as possible.

And guess what Joe Terrorist is going to do? In order to get his wares onto the plane, he's either going to sign up with false information and slip through (in YOUR line, no less!), or he's going to figure out how to falsify the id cards and slip through (in YOUR line again!)...if he has a choice between a high security line and a medium security line, guess which one he's going to want to try and get in?

There's not really any such thing as "signing up with false information", I mean you could, but when you give them everything you have right down to your birth certificate they then assume it's all false anyway and start digging. These things can take weeks - just for one person - and that's why I still think the cost would be quite high to have this done. This is also why I wouldn't think everyone would be expected, or even wanted, to sign up to have this done.

In the end, what does it matter anyway? So I get on the plane first... the thing still isn't taking off until they finish strip searching you and grandma anyway.
