On the TRIBES Vengeance Beta

A forum thread on the TribalWar Forums offers details on plans for TRIBES Vengeance closed beta testing, describing the process, and pimping pre-orders as the way to raise your chances of participation from 1% to 100%:
Closed beta is simply a small link from "no beta" to the "open beta". We're using it to iron out major issues, and get the game to the level of stability required before starting open beta. There are certain issues you simply don't want to try to fix while 50,000 people are bitching that they can't play. Closed beta will let us fix all of those early.

Closed beta will be very small. We've had over 10,000 people register for the beta so far, and there doesn't seem to be a slowdown in sight. We will have less than 250 total openings in the closed beta until the Tribal-Wars LAN in late July. Of those, I've already filled about 100, which leaves 150 for those of you who are still hoping to get in. With my current database, that gives you less than a 1.5% chance of being selected. By the end of the week I estimate that your chances will go down to well below 1%.

However, if you want to take part in the beta there is a way you can have a 100% chance of getting in. Go to your local EBGames, or GameStop and pre-order (Marweas did it at Software Etc for $5) and then register for the Tribal-Wars LAN. Bring your receipt and you'll get a beta CD and you'll be in. I highly suggest that you do this now, because once the T-Ws spots fill up you won't have any way to get into the beta.

i was in t2 beta, but oops i got kicked out with the other 90% of beta because i made gameplay suggestions omg and look how that shit game turned out

this is another shit game with the tribes name. unlike you, i'm not fooled.

Yo Genius... This is a different game, made with a completely solid well known engine, by a totally and completely different team. Moronic people like you really piss me off.

Well, it seems to me thats strictly the reason for several levels of beta, as clearly stated in the post. Closed beta, very small amount of people, aiming to fix the major bugs, probably crashes, and some issues with certain system configs, but not tens of thousands of angry gamers that expect the beta to run flawlessly. Then the open beta at a later point for balancing and fixing remaining issues.

I do agree it's sort of retarded to limit it to only the hardcode of the tribes fans, but on the other hand IMO its likely to get quicker and faster feedback from those people than from thousands of other people that just want to try it out.

That's not even the goal of the closed beta, so what's your point?
tracking bugs and receiving feedback on gameplay is normally the point of a beta....right? (unless thats been redefined of late, I'm always out of the loop) So in what way is opening the early/closed beta to a group who simply ponies up the cash and the rest chosen because of their standing at a dedicated gaming site helping the game advance to a desireable retail product for the rest of us (gaming community)?

Again, maybe I'm a little fucked up but it doesn't seem to be the smart way to go about it.

Making gameplay tweaks after full release is something that should be avoided at all costs. It causes far too much commotion. Especially in the Tribes community.

#27 - Almost out? We've got three months until we ship. Rest assured, beta tester feedback WILL be used and is essential to balance multiplayer. There are a lot of little variables (weapon balance, speed, power; gravity; vehicles) that need to be tweaked just right and can't without hundreds or thousands of people exploiting the system to get an edge.


you have an indefinite amount of time after the game is released to make gameplay tweaks. obviously you don't need to fix everything in beta.

oh wait you're going to have to use that time to deal with CTD bugs for months after the game is released. nm, perhaps you do know something about tribes after all.
