Out of the Blue

Sure enough, temperatures hit about a million degrees around here yesterday. Among other things, I am seriously considering checking out Gila Window Films, a product to address this recommended by Enahs (there are just a few small attic-type windows up here, but any little bit helps). Even then the AC up here will clearly remain a few BTUs shy of what's required... at one point yesterday I started seeing mirages.

think of the number of atoms there are on earth...

http://pages.prodigy.net/jhonig/bignum/qaearth.html

as the website says, It is extremely unlikely that the total number of atoms in the earth is higher than 10^51 or lower than 10^48.

it (more than likely) takes less than 51 digits to represent the number of atoms on the earth. you're right, that is a *very* big number

You could cut in a skylight to improve the circulation. Of course those things always leak so you'd be trading one problem for another...
Do they always leak? Even the non-opening ones?

I've been tempted on many an occasion to get one, or one of those 'sun tube' things. Our roof peaks on a pretty much NE/SW line, so on one side it would let in light for quite a long while...

There's a man out there I haven't seen in 15 years who's trying to kill me.

Hey Blue, I'm trying to get rid of a 3 year-old 8700BTU window air-conditioner (we just upgraded). I'm in Harlem. Don't know if it would help, but let me know if you're interested.

That's appreciated, but the one in here now is about the same... 8700 BTU, and maybe a couple of years older.

That size might be up to the task just based on the square footage up here, but with the sun beating down on the roof, it's not getting it done. I'm thinking I need a 12,500 BTU beastie up here.

From the article
Earlier this month, a group confirmed that it has found the largest prime number known about to date. The new number, expressed as 2 to the 24,036,583th power minus 1, has 7,235,733 decimal digits.

Using some rough arithmatic in my head, printed on paper that number would be approximately 20 miles long! That's a big number.

Maybe this is a signal that it is time to buy an inexpensive laptop and go wireless. That way you can get away from the heat when it's really bad.

IIRC your ceiling is just below your roof line. No room to add insulation. You could cut in a skylight to improve the circulation. Of course those things always leak so you'd be trading one problem for another...
