Out of the Blue

Sure enough, temperatures hit about a million degrees around here yesterday. Among other things, I am seriously considering checking out Gila Window Films, a product to address this recommended by Enahs (there are just a few small attic-type windows up here, but any little bit helps). Even then the AC up here will clearly remain a few BTUs shy of what's required... at one point yesterday I started seeing mirages.

On the other hand, they propose reducing the work week to 32 hours

Ask France how well that 35-hour mandated work week is going for them... last I checked their unemployment was in the 10-20% range, well above that of their European neighbors without such a law.

I'm leaning Green as well. They won't win, but I'll feel better about not directly putting Cons or Libs in power. Forget the NDP.

The problem, IMO, with the Greens is that they are too green... eg: they want to put another $0.10/L tax on gas, and shut down our CANDU reactors/stop producing them for export, even though they are easily the most safe nuclear reactors in the world. I'd be all for it if it weren't for the fact that there aren't any other sources of power production that perform at that level, which aren't more environmentally hazardous (their reason for wanting to shut them down).

On the other hand, they propose reducing the work week to 32 hours. I don't see that happening, though.

That Amazon birch cutting board link is pretty funny - amazing so many people kept the joke running for so long before actual customers started to respond!

Those comments are in reverse order. The actual customers replied first, but it's well and hijacked now.

I'm about equal with Ghandi, a liberal leftist... hmm.. maybe that's why I have such a problem with the US way of doing things after living in the UK for so long and also why I have a lot of problems with Bush & Kerry and their lack of even remotely stating their important beliefs and policies to base a vote on.

Oh, does anyone remember that Warcraft 3 guide parody that was an Ootb a while back. Kind of how an idiot saw warcraft 3, and his own unique guide to it. Very funny. Longshot I know, but I cannot find it through search and someone might have bookmarked it.

The decision in the upcoming Canadian Federal Election is no better than you're faced with down there. People are so mad at the ruling Liberal party that they just want to vote against them. But the other main contender is the Conservative Party, which isn't anything like choosing the lesser of two evils by any stretch... more like a different, but just as evil, evil.
We're likely going to get a minority government of one or the other, complicity. (For those not in the know, this means one party gets more seats then each of the rest of the parties, but not more than the rest combined). So get ready for a new election in less than a year.

At least there is likely to be less regionalism this time around, unlike the last while, where the only party to elect from across the country was the NDP(!). Historically, though, we're a two party system (liberals and conservatives), with one party dominant (liberals). The conservatives have far more consecutive/consistent successes at the provincial level than they do federally.

At least the municipal politicians don't have parties. Yet.

There's a man out there I haven't seen in 15 years who's trying to kill me.

Man, I hate the party system
ayup. I used to think it mattered too.
But politics, politicians and the whole political system are increasingly being recognized for what they really are: Irrelevant.

Basically it just doesn't matter WHO is president.
The world trundles along it's own merry way regardless.

I became aware of this in my student days after a candidate I was actively opposed to won. I thought - OMFG! This is terrible! The country is Doomed! Bad Things are gonna happen! Guess what. Nothing happened.

Ever since that "epiphany", I've noticed every election, despite radically different leaders every 4-8 years - Kennedy, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton - none of it mattered to my everyday life.

Which is why whether it's Bush II or Kerry this year, or Hillary in 2008, it just doesn't matter.

but, like many, it's not so much a vote for Kerry as a vote against Bush.

Interesting site Bronco.

For reference, I got:
Economic Left/Right: -1.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.10

As for the election, I really can't see putting Bush in office again... but, like many, it's not so much a vote for Kerry as a vote against Bush. And that worries me... putting someone in office just because you dislike the current office holder is a lousy way to run things. But there's really no other choice... Nader is more freaky than Bush and Kerry combined.

Oh, and to The Truth -- we are not a parlimantry system. We have a two party system and it's pretty much stacked against any independant -- if you're not part of one of the two main parties you don't automatically get a spot on the ballot, you may not get any government funds for running your campaign, and are generally required to jump through enough hoops that you're doomed to failure. Generally there's less than half a dozen independants elected to major office (US Congress and state governor) across the entire country. If you add in state congress then I'd be surprised if it's above 50. And I'm not sure that there are any independants in Federal circuit courts -- certainly none on the Supreme Court.
