The Battlefield Vietnam Website now offers the promised version 1.02 patch
for the military shooter. As described, the patch addresses crash to desktop and

Oh deary me, dont even compare this game to BF1942. BF1942 wipes the floor with this boring filth. Im sorry but vietnam is in a different league to 1942. More arcade like, useless vehicles, spray and prey gameplay, full of idiots who dont know how to play, poor spawn captures, NO CTF!!!!!

Look at the name of the incremental update file.
battlefield_vietnam_server_v1.01_to_1.02.2_incremental.exe
I'd say it's just for servers. Kind of silly, but whatever. The full patch isn't a big download.

Tried running the incremental (1.01 -> 1.02), and indicates I don't have a dedicated server install.

Yes, but it's still vastly more stable than BF:V. And you can remove the patch and still play with no issues. There's no incompatibility between the patched and unpatched versions.
The only really nice thing the patch adds (IMO) is the removal of the CD check.
