On DNF

The Duke Nukem Forever Release Update on TotalVideoGames (thanks Mike Martinez) is another of those occasional pot-stirring stories about the long-time in-development shooter, based on a quote that was attempting to do just the opposite. The story reproduces a quote from 3D Realms' George Broussard explaining why they are staying low-key at this time, as he reveals that they are still not that close to completion:
“IMO, it's more abusive to the community to continue to talk about and show the game when it's not real close to release. What's the point of leading people on? The best thing we can, and should do, is to shut up, finish the game and start showing it and talking about it when it's near enough release that people can actually see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Just when you'd given up all hope of it being released (ehh, sorry, that was about four years ago), here they come with another not-even-slightly-tantalizing tidbit. *sigh* Can't they just let it die? If it does ever come out, it'll be a terrible mishmash of ideas from years and years of development and rethinking. Anything fresh and new will have been pumped dry years ago. This isn't a dead horse that they're beating, it's a huge f*cking pile of horse jerky.

Move along, nothing to see here.

- Major earth shattering secret? Sounds like a marketting ploy to me, but it still must be pretty big... hmm... what could be big besides Doom3/HL2 that hasn't already been mentioned... well, they do mention the Manhattan Project.

Diablo 3?

If this game was a woman, we would have dumped her a long time ago, refused her attempts at getting back with her frigid ass, and probably have gotten a restraining order.

Yeah but 2500 lines of well written, knock your socks off, nothing like anybody's ever seen before code. If GB and his team of l337 coders had written it. And Voyager wasn't being launched for another 11 years.

My question is: where in the world do they get the apparently Endless supply of money for this project???

You forget the cash cow that is Max Payne. Selling the intellectual rights to MP filled their coffers I'm sure.

Lets just stop the comments right now, ok?

I agree with the ppl who mentioned that DNF probably doesn't exists anymore. That's just the simples suggestion and the most logical. Combine those comments with the question FourPack mentioned and, voilla! We all agree

Playing: Skyrim, World of Warcraft.
Future: Dead Space 3.

"Every thread created talking about the same topic I'm typing about (Next month's PCGAMER) is being deleted by 3DRealms officials at their main message board. Odd? Indeed..."

Not really. If you'll look, you will notice that there is a two month old stickied post prominently displayed at the top of the forum where Brussie squashed this theory in no uncertain terms ("Not us guys, sorry"). They're killing posts to keep rumors at bay; not their most adept skill, it would seem.

Indeed George, what is the point. By the time this game finally comes out, most of us will either be dead or in nursing homes.

I just got a hot tip from an unnamed assocaite who's former roommates with the cousin of GB:

3d Realms has been secretly working on a joint project that will combine Prey with DNF. The project is called Prey Forever and will have more lines of source code then the Voyager space probe!!!

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS GAME, IT'S GOING TO R0X0R3!!!

In auto racing DNF stands for did not finish. I've said this before, but it's so funny it stands repeating. When the very first announcement of DNF came out, my little brother was deciding on which university to attend. This year he becomes a Doctor and decides between becoming a Cardiac or a Trauma Surgeon. When put that way, there's no defending a dev cycle this long. I would think that a game could be made, engine changes and all, in less than the amount of time it takes a kid to enter University, and come out the other side a newly minted MD. Of course the fanboys on the D3DRealms forums couldn't disagree more. They're like that Diakatana cult that turned on Romero over night. Maybe it'll be out by the time my own son graduates University. In 2031.

LOL really? I remember they did a HUGE PC Gamer feature back in 98' doing exactly that! It stuck in my mind of one of PC Gamer's biggest previews EVER...and 6 years later it seems as if 3D Realms has been stuck in a time continuum, completely oblivious to the fact that not many gamers today have even played the oldschool Dukes or DN 3D... and that he won't be recognized as a gaming ICON (like back in his hayday) because they've already seen too many Serious Sam's, or Will Rocks, etc and he'll just be another "clone" to them. If you think about it, the whole idea behind Duke isn't really as fresh and entertaining as it was back then, or at least won't be to many newer and younger gamers...

Heres hoping Duke sets the new bar for violence, sex, and language! Cheers!
(but with the government now on a media witchhunt who knows??)

How many years has it been now?

Since DNF was first announced in 1997 ...

1) The International Space Station was built.

2) A couple of robot landing craft journeyed from Earth to Mars.

3) More than a dozen massively multiplayer online games have gone from design to launch to multiple expansions, including the first one, Ultima Online.

4) Two major revisions of the Windows operating system were completed. A third is upcoming.

So where's the update on Teamfortress 2?

at this point, who really gives a fuck about this? There's a thing called building anticipation, and then there's a thing called YOU'VE PUT IT OFF TOO LONG AND YOU ARE NOW A JOKE. At least Romero had the balls to release Daikatana.

As for the salaries, don't forget they were asking people to sign on for a low salary, but points on the product. Who knows if that's still the case, but depending on how long you could string people along, that would lower your overhead.

People, forget it. DNF is not coming out. I figured that out about 4 or so years ago, after their 3rd engine switch. These last 4 years or so have not YET proved me wrong.

If the final game has even half of the action shown in that video they released for e3 several years back, I will buy it. My only hope is they increase the polygon count on that striper.

I think it would be a mistake for them to release it this year if D3 and HL2 come out also.
