On DNF

The Duke Nukem Forever Release Update on TotalVideoGames (thanks Mike Martinez) is another of those occasional pot-stirring stories about the long-time in-development shooter, based on a quote that was attempting to do just the opposite. The story reproduces a quote from 3D Realms' George Broussard explaining why they are staying low-key at this time, as he reveals that they are still not that close to completion:
“IMO, it's more abusive to the community to continue to talk about and show the game when it's not real close to release. What's the point of leading people on? The best thing we can, and should do, is to shut up, finish the game and start showing it and talking about it when it's near enough release that people can actually see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Out of the Blue aside, which is simply a repository for general comments: ...

4. Mention Derek Smart

I just remember how GB heckled some other game's engine about how bad it looked. I don't remember the game now, maybe someone could fill me in. I just remember that tons of people on the board basically yelled at him until he went away. Specifially, I remember the comment "don't you have a game to finish".

Most of us played Duke in high school. What they don't realize is that if you put scantily clad women and stupid wisecracks in a game now, most people are going to say "meh". It would have still been funny seven years ago.

This is a classic,

I can feel secure in knowing that not reading this article: 1) is not informing me of anything I don't already know, 2) is in the same state it's always been and leaves everyone at some point a near decade ago in anticipation of pretty much realizing the sum of the this total moronic festival of chatter that has become 3Drealm's nemesis...? So, All I need to do is simply release a spontaneous bit of emotion that I feel meets the weight of this blurb...

"HA HA HA HA HA HA"

What 3DR doesn't seem to understand with all these endless engine changes etc is that it's not going to be the graphics that make this game fun, at least if they're trying to repeat what made D3D such a great game. I STILL go back and play some D3D every once in a while despite the fact that the Build engine is total junk now - it was the gameplay and the sense of humor that made it such a great game, not the engine. If they really are switching now to Source or whatever, pixel shaders and normal maps aren't going to make it immediately become a good game.

Nobody stopped caring about DNF, everyone on this board wants to play it as badly as D3 and HL2. When we played the original DN3D it was such an action trip that nowadays when we hear about it's sequel we immediately associate all those good vibes from the 1st.

The stark reality is that if 3Drealms continues to "develop" DNF, there will never be a DN sequel. Which is really too bad.

Which leads me back to my original post. If 3Drealms and George B had an ounce of intelligence, they'd sell the DN rights to a developer that could turn it around in 2 years, and we'd all be happy.

But they won't, so instead we get to gripe about it, which is nearly as fun

Major earth shattering secret? Sounds like a marketting ploy to me, but it still must be pretty big... hmm... what could be big besides Doom3/HL2 that hasn't already been mentioned... well, they do mention the Manhattan Project.

Diablo 3?

StarCraft 2? (continuing with the blizzard theme)
C&C:Tiberian Sunset?

Starcraft 3? - would be out around the release date of DN∞

I'd forgotten about this one. They're still working on it?
Where is 3D Realms getting this development cash?
Are they looking to hire anybody? Like... Ion Storm?

The game is actually nearly finished. The only thing left is to perfect the mind control functionality. This presents subliminal messages to the player that accomplish several company goals. First, it makes you think you haven't actually played the game, and so you go out and buy it again - they are shooting for at least six copies per customer. Then, it makes you want to vote for George B. for President (as if already having had two George B.s wasn't plenty). And third, it projects the idea "Cliffy B. Is Not Gay" into your mind. This is the part they are having trouble with, since it appears to be impossible to get people to believe Cliffy B. is not gay.

...considering the past press release, various famous quotes from Broussard and crew, and generally negative/hostile meanings of the last few meaningful blurbs (along the lines of "We will be better than game X" or "Ha - that is nothing, wait until you see our game," etc.)

The company does know about abusing the community - even on their own boards.

Wondering which tech overhaul this is on,

$10 million can be stretched for a while.
