On DNF

The Duke Nukem Forever Release Update on TotalVideoGames (thanks Mike Martinez) is another of those occasional pot-stirring stories about the long-time in-development shooter, based on a quote that was attempting to do just the opposite. The story reproduces a quote from 3D Realms' George Broussard explaining why they are staying low-key at this time, as he reveals that they are still not that close to completion:
“IMO, it's more abusive to the community to continue to talk about and show the game when it's not real close to release. What's the point of leading people on? The best thing we can, and should do, is to shut up, finish the game and start showing it and talking about it when it's near enough release that people can actually see light at the end of the tunnel.”

So they fucked up, so they couldn't get their tech solid and were caught in a neverending cycle of slippage. Big deal, mistakes happen. I bet those of you who like to play Mr. armchair developer wouldn't stand a chance co-ordinating DNF's development.

Yes, it's taken a long time (6 years in fact) but how long has HL2 taken? Even Doom 3 is heading for the 4 year mark. But at this stage Mr. Broussard can't win. If he makes claims about the game, people will call him an arrogant prick, if he downplays things people will say he's lost faith.

I think we should applaud him for carrying on and learning from his mistakes. At least now the tech is fixed and it's just a question of finishing the content.

3D Realms or Apogee, whatever you want to call them, should just shut their doors! If you recall, Prey was going to be the Quake killer! What the hell happened? Quake 2, Quake 3, were released! Prey is dead in the water! I believe 3D Realms licensed the Quake 2 code for DNF! ID Software is about to release Doom 3! And Broussard is basicly saying DNF is nowhere near finished! I hope like hell if and when it gets released people will not buy it! IMHO - I'm sick of these companies who talk all this BS and never produce! Are you reading this Romero and Broussard? This is my 2 cents worth!

However, you may rest assured that it was many, many more than 2500.

I stand corrected - former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin says that 25 years ago the Voyager spacecraft had 5000 lines of computer code.

If you're talking about patching a system and then counting the total number of lines of code written (including code replaced/removed during the patching process), I could see how you could arrive at a figure of 'many, many more times' than 2500. But lets face it, the things had a memory limitation to deal with and I was really talking about code that keeps the spacecraft operating today - not total lines written.

The project is called Prey Forever and will have more lines of source code then the Voyager space probe!!!

Thats not saying much, I think Voyager only had around 2500 lines of code.

Not exactly.

My father was one of the lead programmers on both Voyager spacecraft. They reprogrammed those things constantly, so they didn't have a fixed number of lines of code.

However, you may rest assured that it was many, many more than 2500.

'' currently standing at seven years in development and counting. ''

OMFG !!!! I never saw a game ''going on'' for that many years, have u ? and if yes does that games actualy worth da fuck ?

DN:Forever was looking to be really nice when they first talk about it, now it as been 7((seven) years....they cant just take stuff from 1997 and put it in a game released in a years or two. They would look retarded or something that is really ''too fucking late''. I used to be a Duke nukem fan from almost the begggining but waiting just drain me cause now im tired of those game cie. that always make the game late.

They saw FarCry, Doom3 and Half-Life2 and realized they yet need another engine to make the game that "promising". So it will be at least another year until its done. and then there will be new engines again and they will...

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

... so how's that 'Holodeck' thing coming along? Any progress on that yet? Oh, you thought our game was coming out for the PC?! Silly fanboy!

What's the point of leading people on?

I think that question could best be answered by a female.

The best thing we can, and should do, is to shut up, finish the game and start showing it and talking about it when it's near enough release that people can actually see light at the end of the tunnel.

... because that strategy worked SO WELL for the guys over at Valve Software...

DNF has been done since 1998, but we needed an ultra-secure and mega-reliable distribution method for our game that works over super-duper-high-bandwidth connections. We should have it ready to deliver the first patch about the time you're collecting social security. And remember, ALWAYS BET ON DUKE!!!

Its funny you say that, how many people have died that were waiting on this game. if you ask me its pretty pathetic that these guys cant seem to get their acts together. Hell I’ve brought out 3 major Coop mods since they were saying that crap. Our latest Coop mod took 2 years to make and it’s being released in about a month.

If it perfection they are trying to achieve, I think they just wrote a new chapter on it.

Why does anyone even care about this vaporware at this point? If and when it ever arrives and people are hailing as if it were the second coming I might, just might, check it out then.

Bring on HL2 and Dewm 3.
