Er...I believe the engine is still secondary for id. I know that Carmack has commented in the past that the licensing has been a significantly smaller percentage than the actual games. Back then, he even commented that it was higher than normal (maybe 25% or 33% - something along those lines) because of the success of
Half-Life.
Granted, you could tweak numbers and look at them on a yearly basis; id may not always release a game each year, but the game does bring in much more money when/if it is released.
Note that this is hardly the setup of your normal game developer...
