"but none of these things designed represents the feel of combat in the enviroments of Vietnam"

Ok, Mr. Jensen - I mean Shataan - explain to me how you, a Canadian guy who was still in junior high when US involvement in Vietnam came to an end, has any idea what the feel of combat in Vietnam was like?

I am all for stupid, mindless fun.

Just don't box it up in a crappy engine with crappy gameplay.

Romero's ego irritated everybody (unless you like being his b*tch,) but Daikatana just shipped to late and that entire first act was crap. If they had take out that first part, the other acts are interesting. It was dated, though; if released on time, it would have been a natural evolutionary step between the gameplay of, say, Quake and Half-Life.

Trespasser was buggy and had poor gameplay. It was worth a few laughs for its "health meter" and the plastic man effects the screwed up engine gave you. However, it could have been a great game and the overall design is really cool; who would not want a FPS Jurassic Park game that was done incredibly well?

Invisible War was just an ok game with a crap engine. As a sequel to Deus Ex, it was an outright failure. You need to make sure that you evolve a series, not mutate it.

I have no issues with The Sims other than personal preference. I play games to get away from the real world, not to just play a game about my life all over again. No problems with the game, though - I just do not like what it offers.

Tired of being shoveled crap in my face or having obvious issues ignored,
Ray

"a mature and serious depiction of combat in Vietnam, supported by intensive research, high production values, and gameplay systems designed from the ground up to represent the feel of combat in the environments of Vietnam."

A mature and serious depiction that will be all but killed off because of the totally unrealistic stuff crammed in and kiddiefied. Threat direction indicators, candycolored aim rets, a health pickup system where you seemingly stop motionless when you pass over a K.I.A. body, and watch the health meter spool up. The list just may go on, but none of these things designed represents the feel of combat in the enviroments of Vietnam.
These elements do more to take away from what could be an awesome experience than enhance it. On one hand I look at some of the vids and think wowzers, and imediately after that I see the crap they added ala the stuff described about, and my whole being screams out.. "that blows harder than Linda Lovelace on a good day". lol "Blows monkies" as well comes to mind.
I hope the PC version is nothing like the XBux version.

The look of the new Leisure Suit Larry (evidently Larry's "nephew") is disturbingly reminiscent of Jimmy Neutron. Instead of an early middle aged guy who's short and squat, we've got a childlike man who looks like a child. Very disturbing indeed.

Getting 10 year old Jimmy Neutron into sexual escapades does not appeal to me, sorry!

I know everyone hates Postal 2 here, but he's got a point when he says that. His company could come out with the best game, and it would always be followed up by "made by Running With Scissors, makers of Postal 2". Don't think I'm overreacting -- the same thing happened (happens) with Daikatana, Trespasser, Deus Ex 2, The Sims, etc.

I dunno when gamers got so jaded, but it's almost impossible for them to just enjoy stuff anymore. It's almost like if they don't like a particular game, it's because the developers personally hate them, so the gamer is going to slam them at every opportunity, even after the fact. Compare this with the apparently inability to purchase more than one game per year (Doom3 vs. Half Life 2, etc), the rampant elitism about anything mainstream, the complaining about system requirements and the flat out immaturity, and it's a wonder that developers even make games these days.

I guess it's a good that they generally do it because they enjoy making games, period, but I worry about what happens when that begins to wear thin, and they realize they're standing in a room full of whiny immature players, who can't be appeased no matter what.
