Uru Add-on

Following the unveiling of a new Uru expansion on the Uru: Complete Chronicles Website (story), Ubisoft sends along the official announcement of the Uru: The Path of the Shell expansion:
Uru(tm): The Path of the Shell Tells of D'ni(tm)'s Future

SAN FRANCISCO - May 26, 2004 - Ubisoft, one of the world's leading videogame companies, today announced that Uru(tm): The Path of the Shell, the third piece of Myst's Uru adventure, will be available beginning July 13 for the PC at the manufacturer's suggested retail price of $19.99.

"We are excited to bring this chapter of the Uru story to eager fans," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing, Ubisoft. "Uru: Ages Beyond Myst has achieved both critical and consumer success, and [s6] The Path of the Shell will only help solidify the title as a 'must-have' for Myst and adventure fans."

This adventure's complete boxed set, [s7] Uru(tm): Complete Chronicles, includes the content in Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, Myst Uru: To D'ni(tm) (the free downloadable expansion released in February) and The Path of the Shell. The PC release of Complete Chronicles will be available on July 13 at the manufacturer's suggested retail price of $39.99.

The Path of the Shell will challenge and reward players with many new puzzles, new clothing options (including reward clothing), new player journals, technical features (including swimming), and five all-new Relto customization options.

"The Path of the Shell further expands the Uru portion of the Myst adventure series," said Rand Miller, co-creator of Myst and president of Cyan Worlds. "We know fans are excited to play through the next stages of the Uru story, and we're confident they will be impressed."

Uru Chronology:

    · Uru: Ages Beyond Myst took players on an adventure to learn of the D'ni's past.
    · Uru: To D'ni, the first expansion pack, which is still available via free download, leads players into the present.
    · Uru: The Path of the Shell, the second expansion pack, looks into the future of the D'ni.

Uru: Ages Beyond Myst was included in TIME Magazine's top ten games for 2003, won PC Gamer's "Adventure Game of the Year" and was among the top-five selling PC titles for the 2003 holiday season - in fact, sales outdistanced its closest adventure genre competitor by more than 100,000 units.

I think the title is Uru:The Path of The Shells... and it tells of D'ni's future. However, Ubisoft are French so they may just be trying to mess with the English language, in retaliation for the le telephone and le television.

EDIT: Oh and "daikatana 3000ad: the trespassing(tm)" is pretty funny.

...wait, didn't the first Uru have such poor sales that they had to cancel the Multiplayer component completely. And now they are building an expansion pack for it?

well the game itself might have sold great - but the number of people subscribing to Uru Live might not have been enough to keep it alive.

not quite, they reused the content which was intended for the now disfunctional Uru-Live and made two addons out of it. It's practically "Uru-Live singleplayer"

The whole 'lack of sales' thing is the least of many reasons Uru Live was canceled.

Uru Live was ahead of it's time and a laggy mess, so lagged that most the people who signed up were never cleared to access Live. It was pretty much doomed one way or another

That being said, Uru is still a breathtaking experience

I'll just wait until they have a couple of more extension packs, and buy them together at one low price.... of course, if everyone does that, they won't be any more.

The Uru Live portion was supposedly canceled because there weren't enough people that signed into the post-release beta. The servers/software couldn't even handle the people that did show up though. I started beta testing the game 10 months before release, and the netcode just got worse as time went on. How did they think they would get people interested in URU LIVE when nobody knew what it was, and all the people on it experienced the terrible netcode and no gameplay?

I recently tried the Guild Wars E3 beta. There were dozens of avatars in a small area with vast highly detailed surroundings with a high framerate! It is possible.
