Are you sure it wasn't Space Empire III? Nope, stellar empire.
There where dots, they represented stars.
Lines connected the dots, to get to one star system you go through another. Your fleet of ships where rectangles on the dots, with a number signaling how many ships you have. Each star had a resource and could build a certain amount of ships per turn.
It was overly simple, but fun and really did require a lot of strategy the way it was balanced.

This is supposedly a download for it, but none of the downloads work
And boy did I was they did, a lot of that stuff I would love to give a go again!

They've got a IV out and a V in the works, I believe.

Does anyone here remember "Stellar Empire"
Man, that game was fun!
I can not find it anywhere to download :(, but I want it! It was freeware, so you would think it would be around somewhere, but no luck.
That was one of the mest space empire building games ever!

I wouldn't call the game a space sim. It has space sim elements, but it's mostly a futuristic castle defence game. Instead of the castle, you have a space station.
The point of the game is to collect drills, and mine asteroids. This is how you make money. The asteroids are a little distance away from your station, and the drills have a short range, so you need to add joints and beams to your station to get the drill near the asteroids. You can also mount defence guns on your base because enemies attack you very frequently.
You advance in tech by attacking the enemy's base, and if you kill a series of special enemy structures, you get a new drill.
That's the game in a nutshell.

That's good to know. Pity I deleted the game thinking I wouldn't get a chance to try it again.

No, that happened because the of the one day limit. You can play multiple 30 min games in one day.

Oh, and you only get 30 minutes *total*. I just tried to play it again and I got a message telling me to post my impressions on their forum.

It's cute.
Would I buy it? No. Would I suggest you try it? Sure.

Yes you can play as many times as you want(1 day for each new version) but the maximum time you can play on one session is 30 mins.

#15, see #10.
(edit: having taken a glance at the web site which words this as "The demo has a 30 minute time out", I think perhaps it means that you get 30 minutes each time you run the game, not that after 30 minutes of play you can no longer run the game (as the story here seemed to imply). That would actually make a whole lot more sense. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is correct?)
I'm with the rest -- there's absolutely no way I'm downloading 24MB for a maximum of 30mins. I wouldn't do it even if I had broadband. I've tried smaller demos with 1 hour time limits, and they left me with absolutely no clue as to whether I'd get my money's worth out of the full game. 30 minutes is just stupid. And for a beta version... I always thought the point of beta versions is to track down bugs. You can't do that in 30 minutes, either. I see no point in this release, but look forward to reading about a vaguely sane scheme for the release of the final demo.

Hell, some of the best games, like Master of Magic, take up less space than that. I played around with it, and I thought it was kinda fun. Reminded me of a light space sim with station building elements. I can see a lot of potential here. I've played EVERY space sim for the PC around, and this could be a "good" one, not a "great" one.
