I really dont see how the dual-screen, stylus action is going to take video games to the next level... look at the review of that metroid game which is essentially unplayable with the current control scheme

the PSP is NOT a gimmick, and the obvious next wave of portable devices...

Nintendo's trend of marketing to children has taken a decidedly gimmicky turn this time, being that the DS is not really much of a hardware upgrade from the current gameboy.. except the wireless net. which is pretty cool

the main point is the double price tag... its about the money, not teh games

PSP is more game oriented, less to no gimmick factor

It will create a new market for cushioned seats - or a reclining toilet even! I don't know about you, but I'm buying stock in Infinium Labs RIGHT NOW!

Come on, don't be foolish. Buy stock in the toilet industry.

I think you guys are overlooking the great revolution that the Phantom will bring us. You will be able to play games while sitting on your toilet. I mean, think about it - with games delivered over broadband you no longer have to drive your lazy asses to Hollywood Video or CompUSA. Add a 50' plasma screen, a mini-fridge, and a foot stool to your bathroom, and you'll be able to eat and shit all you want and never have to get up. It will create a new market for cushioned seats - or a reclining toilet even! I don't know about you, but I'm buying stock in Infinium Labs RIGHT NOW! I anxiously await the day when all I have to do is lay in a cocoon full of goo with some coax plugged into my skull! (Phantom II maybe?)

It doesn't sound like you played it, he was being facetious.

In terms of marketing gimmick..... care to elaborate? Based on the games that were on display (both full games and tech demos), the DS is a lot more than a "marketing gimmick"...... the wireless multiplayer seems very smooth, the dual screens were shown to have a lot more purpose beyond just one screen being used for something goofy like a map or stats.... and the touch screen clearly has a lot of potential for some new and interesting functionality (if you would check out the various movies and demonstrations you'd see it goes far beyond being a gimmick).

And aside from that, they showed that it will be a really fun device even for games that don't use all of the functionality....... the main point is that it's a system with a lot of possibilities, and even at it's most basic, if it is just 2D and 3D games it will still be a nice device........ but seeing how developers are taking advantage of all the new features (and most all of them were on display, except for the voice recognition), I think it will be something really special.

For what it's worth I think the PSP will be a pretty nice device too.

I'd suggest trying to see movies of the Metroid Prime: Hunters demo.......... gamespot at least had some good movies of them from their tour of Nintendo's E3 booth.

It looks a LOT better in motion, and very smooth.

The Mario 64x4 demo in motion also looked beautiful.

And no, personally I'm not underwhelmed by the DS. From seeing all the movies and reading about some of the tech demos, etc. I am really excited about it and the potential for it. When I first heard about the DS, the two screens, etc. it sounded more like a gimmick to me, but getting to see the actual way games are working on it has me convinced it is a lot more than that.

And I think that it will be a great platform even for those developers who can't think of anything more than just to use one of the screens for a map or a playbook or whatever.

i cant help the fact you cant recognize marketing gimmicks... maybe you should log on to your EQ account and go drain your brain

Since it sounds like you played it at E3, you should go into more detail. Or is it you have no idea what you're talking about?

And then the Phantom crashed, a Windows BSOD filling the 50” widescreen plasma TV. And then came the questions."

Too funny!

edit: They're launching in Sept., and they still are dealing with a prototype? They should already be in production by now...

edit again: And am I the only one underwhelmed by the DS? I mean sure, the hardware looks sweet, but those shots of Metroid the other day looked craptactular...

HAHAHA!!

"The Phantom representative then showed off the Phantom, with its rather slick GUI, and fired up Unreal Tournament 2004 demo. Running off Windows XP, with a 40 GB hard drive and GeForce card, the Phantom ran UT2k4 without a hitch. Framerates were smooth, and the same addictive UT2k4 demo we all know and love was being played, slouched on the couch in the living room, like it was meant to be played there all along.

And then the Phantom crashed, a Windows BSOD filling the 50” widescreen plasma TV. And then came the questions."

time to file a lawsuit, BIOTCH!!
