Out of the Blue

Was that a stunning Sopranos last night, or what? I don't know if that was everybody's cup of tea, but I loved that... if there was a concern that some of the psychological twists in the show had taken a back seat to soap opera elements, that certainly made up for lost time.

amusingly im looking around for a dual screen setup for image editing (mainly flash and print), im looking at LCD's due to space constraints.

Also i need a single large screen for gaming, was thinking about LCD but reading the stuff about frame limits im thinking that CRT is the way to go on that.

Considering the above and a budget of about $1000 for each screen (Less if possible, but hey), what would you guys think to be my best options?

Well, either way, the poster of the auction is going to get in shit.

They may have said "Xbox box" but categorically they defined it as Xbox as the platform, PAL as the standard supported, and "new in box".

While "new in box" can be open to interpretation, neither platform nor PAL are.

The buyer is owed one LE Xbox.

And your monitor can support 90 Hz operation at whatever resolution you're playing at?

Yes, depending on the game it will be either 100 or 120!

I presume you're not doing professional graphics then. LCDs don't have the color depth, contrast, or black level that CRTs do.

While that is true, LCDs still have one HUGE advantage over CRTs.

What you see on a LCD better represents what you will see in print. Does not sound like much, but if you have ever done anything that had to be printed, you would quickly know how hard it is to get the print version to look like the screen version, editing/creating it on a properly configured LCD is easier the a CRT. And yes, I have done graphic editing semi-professionally, and it is a lot less tweaking when you can look at it on a LCD (which usually looks sharper/crisper/smother anyway).

As I said though, I have both, as they are not good for everything, or even what they are good at they are not perfect. But the black level is also better for printing, as with printing there is no “lack of light” black, but the color black. And the color depth and contrast are greatly improving in LCDs (but it seems stupid to pay for them on a LCD if a CRT can do it for cheaper! If that really is your biggest need). Soon, everything but the black level will be moot (except the freagin cost) LCDs are great, but not percept. If you get one to do a dual setup, you will quickly realize how amazingly different they actually are, and how much “more better” they are for some things for you.

But, it is all in the person, everyone’s eyes and brain function differently. For instances, women can see on average ~80,000+ more “shades of color” then men; and on average ~30,000 of that is just the “red spectrum”. Now ya know why whenever comedians tell jokes about women and clothing, it has something about red shoes in it, because they can freakin see a difference when we can’t!....

Basically, do not completely rule them out until you have the opportunity to do a side by side comparison.

As a wise man once said

It’s all goode.

*edit*
Keep in mind I am talking about a GOOD LCD,One that is ridiculously expensive compared to a CRT! (which is why I never bought one, but it was a gift, and I am in love now).

*EDIT again*

Ohh and btw, as other people have responded. Creating wonderful and color rich photoshop funnies is not professional. More often then not professional will be a logo, or advertisement flyer, and we can be talking 1-4 colors only. But again, try em, they both rock, rock on!

Yeah if you're going to do any professional graphics/image editing then you need a professional CRT instead of an LCD. Something like the Sony GDM-F520 21" CRT would be great for graphics. Being able to do 2048 x 1536 @ 85Hz is pretty nice It's pretty much the standard when it comes to graphics/video editing.

A CRT has better color, resolution, picture quality, etc. The only thing LCDs have over traditional CRTs is that they weigh less and save space.

Too bad it seems as though Sony has discontinued their CRT line in favor of LCDs.

I would say that most newer monitors do. If anything, I prefer both my games and monitor to be refressing at 100Hz.

Of course, that boils down to personal preference of hardware. I think that 60FPS should be the minimum for any fast-paced or action gaming (you can get away with lower FPS if playing an adventure game, use a slow-moving third-person, etc.) and graphics seem to have a "solid" feel to them only when they hit 100FPS. Again, from my perspective.

Thinking I will likely consider other monitor types in about five years,
Ray

Now, I personally can tell a huge difference if I limit a game from 90 down to just 80.

And your monitor can support 90 Hz operation at whatever resolution you're playing at?

If not, then the extra fps are just creating tearing. Of course, in most engines, there's certain operations that occur in the backend every frame, so I'm not about to say that there's no advantage to fps higher than your monitor's refresh rate.

62.5 fps should be adequate for visual quality, but I'm saying this without having actually tried one. My ViewSonic 21PS is 8 years old and going strong. <knocks on wood>

they are absolutely wonderful for image editing

Er... I presume you're not doing professional graphics then. LCDs don't have the color depth, contrast, or black level that CRTs do. None of that is a big deal, of course, unless you're a professional graphics artist.

The P225fb is 22" as well (20" viewable.)

I absolutely love thie monitor; it has a large number of options, the image is crisp and clear, and the color vibrancy is hands-down amazing.

It would help if you could find an in-store demo, but I would expect you to have problems finding stores that either have a rather large selection of high-end monitors or that have samples which are not completely burned out.

Look around; a number of sites and magazines give you a couple of high-end options, none of which you can go wrong with, but I would highly suggest the ViewSonic.

I have the viewsonic P95f+ 19"

The one thing I really like about is its ultrabright button.
one press and its 3x as bright, one more and its 4x as bright, and one more press and its back to normal.

This is perfect for multiplayer games, so you can see people hiding in shadows, but then when you quit you can quickly change it back so your desktop looks good.
No more screwing around with powerstrip and crap like that.

I've never even really considered the LCD's as I've heard they aren't all that great for gaming.

An expensive LCD will get you around the equivalent of 62.5 FPS, and I can not find any faster then that.

Now, I personally can tell a huge difference if I limit a game from 90 down to just 80.

But as long as you can limit the game to the LCD’s equivalent FPS, you should not have too many artifacts.

But go to a computer store (COMPUTER STORE, NOT BestBuy) and tell them you are thinking of buying a LCD, but are unsure of the gaming experience. They will let you try it out in the store (Just download Wolf:ET, or bring your favorite game on cd). I personally can NOT stand them for gaming, but they are absolutely wonderful for image editing (A GOOD one that is). I got one of each, dual setup, that is the way to go!

LCDs are improving, but nothing beats a big, fat CRT for gaming. Of course, a CRT will be about one-hundred times heavier. Here is my pride and joy:
