Thief: Deadly Shadows Gold

Eidos' 'Thief Deadly Shadows' Steals May 25 Ship Date in North America (thanks Frans) is the announcement that ION Storm's third installment in the Thief series begun by Looking Glass Games is complete for both PC and Xbox, and expected to meet its planned May 26 in-store date. Here's a bit:
Thief: Deadly Shadows places you in the role of Master Thief Garrett, the quintessential anti-hero that steals from the rich and keeps for himself. In Thief: Deadly Shadows, Garrett finds himself assisting the Keepers, the secret society that trained Garrett in his youth. He is tasked with preventing a prophesised Dark Age from coming into fruition. Thief: Deadly Shadows was developed by Ion Storm, creators of the critically-acclaimed Deus Ex series.

Thief: Deadly Shadows will continue the Ion Storm tradition of open-ended emergent gameplay the studio is famous for. The freedom to choose a unique play style is what sets Thief: Deadly Shadows apart from any other game further immersing the player into the adventure. Thief: Deadly Shadows features a powerful physics system, startlingly smart AI, enhanced character modelling and animation, a groundbreaking sound propagation system and state- of-the art lighting and graphics for which Ion Storm is famous for.

PC Gamer gave it a good preview in the latest issue, not that what they say is Bible but they said it's not substantially different from 1 and 2. Just have to see I guess, no demo makes me wonder however...

Call me a cynic, but I don't care about the ship date; I want to know when the game will be patched to run as gamers expect, assuming that will be possible.

Previews need to suck up and put a good spin on everything. Do you ever see negative previews about big-time games?

I've found gaming rags to be solidly untrustworthy over the years. Dunno if it's the long lead time or what, but they've generally had a higher margin of error than I find acceptable. Also, you don't see much in the way of post-patch updates from them. Give me a bevy of online articles and discussion that I can interact with, then I'll be willing to make my purchasing decision.

However, the Deus Ex 2-style small corridors style works rather well in the Thief universe...as long as they didn't screw the pooch with their implementation of gameplay (please tell me they got their performance problems ironed out, as Far Cry runs better than DX2 ever did). Eagerly awaiting the Game Reviews update with the Thief reviews @ Blues.

Edit: and graphics for which Ion Storm is famous for.
This makes me wonder who's writing their press releases these days...

Id rather have a level editor than a demo, but Eidos wont have any of it.

PC Gamer gave Horizons a 50% rating, not very good for a high budget MMO, so they don't grab their ankles for everyone.

It wasn't an official preview/review, it was a Hands-On column where the person who played Thief 3 wrote about the playing experience, and not all of it was positive, he/she stated there was some MOB encounter imbalances and other things that needed to get worked out but the feel wasn't so much different from the rest of the series.

There is no reason however for no demo now that it has gone gold. No demo, no sale.

I find it interesting that not a single preview has mentioned anything about the load zones or said anything unambiguous about the sizes of the maps (except that they're bigger than Deus Ex (which isn't saying a whole lot) or that the *missions* are bigger than the original Thief's (which doesn't say anything about map sizes)). Some of the reviewers have got to know this is a big, hotly discussed issue on all the Thief boards. Did these guys all sign NDA's promising not to mention it? Or was it made known to them that Eidos would not be pleased if they talked about it?

And then I see this time there's no demo.

Oh, and I don't hold out much hope for an editor. What could an editor possibly do except hurt sales for the XBox? Then again, perhaps we might see one a year down the road when XBox sales are all tapped out, but if they do decide to release it, don't expect to hear any official decision on it for a long time.

All previews are approved before they're released.

I won't be touching this game for a while. I need to see a LOT of positive feedback from users before I consider getting it.

They've definitely lost the confidence of gamers who might otherwise just go out and purchase this game before hearing any reviews/ratings.

Personally I want this game to redeem Ion Storm because I know that at least have the potential to succeed...plus they own the rights to the series.

PCGamer... meh.

CGW is the only way to fly.

CGW has only made one mistake fairly recently, and that's hiring Wil O Neal.
Oh... and rewarding Black and White with 5/5 stars before finishing the game.

DX2 was a good, solid game: it just was -not- Deus Ex, or in any way related: it was a Console-crossover title, and it showed.

Now, understand, I dont have -anything- against Consoles, I just dont like them, and I dont play them. Theyre fine games, which I just dont find entertaining, and to sum up the reason: its too damn simple.

DX you had a multitude of choices, and all of them forked out to others, and each worked equally well, when thought about. DX2 it was easier to shoot then to think.

Now, what does this seeminly unrelated comment have to do with Thief? Well, ION seems to need the console market to keep itself profitable, so, I'm not going to be buying this Thief game until I know it hasnt been Console-ified, like DX2.

IW was a freaking joke of linearity. It was always either shoot them and open door or crawl through some vents and drop down on other side of door. Of course it's hard to add depth to MAPS THAT FREAKIN SMALL.
