EverQuest II Beta Sign-ups

As promised (story), sign-ups to beta test EverQuest II are now being accepted (thanks Fazumar Faelcree), though they are currently only seeking North American testers for the MMORPG sequel ("European customers who wish to participate in a localized beta program may begin the beta application process on June 1, 2004."). There is still no indication of how many testers are being accepted, nor is there an explanation of how testers will be chosen.

That's a certainty. People will have spent years building up their EverQuest character, so I doubt they will just willingly give that up to start over in a new EQ game.

They changed to DX9 if thats what you mean. I recommend not to try it out right now because the game has more bugs and glitches than ever before. take a look at the official tech forum and you will see what I mean. right now it looks more like a early beta or late alpha.

Have they done that 'huge' graphics engine update for Everquest 1 yet?

I'm getting an itch to play it again...

I also am having a blast playing City of Heroes, but don't see this as a 'long term' MMORPG. I mean how long will running through the same looking city streets beating up thugs be fun? (right now it ROCKS, but I'm thinking it'll get old pretty fast.)

I wish it had more depth ala EQ just without the tedium. I'm hoping EQ2 will provide this (here's hoping...)

The problem about instanced zones (places) is that you wont be able to meet new people there. I cant remember how many times I made friends in a dungeon or any other place where I hunted stuff. but the big problem that instanced places counter is crowded zones. I dont believe there will ever be a real fantasy/adventure atmosphere if you meet 15 to 100 other people in a tight dungeon...

but why should people care if its instanced or not?

You know how little girls like to show off their Barbie dolls? Well, MMORPG fags like showing off their digital Barbie dolls, and they can't show them off in instanced dungeons.

Actually, this news item is slightly wrong, they are taking beta applications from everywhere, not just North America. UBI are doing a foreign language European beta further down the line, but the is meant IN ADDITION to the main beta which everyone is free to apply to. They only mentioned it at all to let European players know they might prefer to wait for the European beta.

The fact that anyone can apply to this beta has been discussed and confirmed with SoE on their official forums and in interviews for weeks now.

In most of the newwer mmogs it seems that you just get a small group and go level grind, ignoring all other people, except when in a city.

From what I understand, with the traditional MMO's that have instanced zones, those instanced zones account for only 5% to 10% of the 'game world' whereas GW will be the opposite with 5% to 10% of the game world being a common place and the rest of the game Diablo style with 8 players. So with your EQ's and the like most of the game is still all common areas with certain quests and dungeons that are instanced. Sounds to me like GW is almost all instanced with the oppurtunity to grab 8 friends and go to the arena and fight other 8 person guilds.

thats my opinion anyways, from watching friends play them.

No, while most mmorpgs coming out have instanced content theres a equal amount of non instanced if not a majority. Also in most mmorpgs people spend alot of time in outdoor areas hunting, not just dungeon crawls(in fact for a long time most people hunted outdoors rather then in dungeons in everquest).

FINALLY managed to get it submitted. Damn that took forever.

Anyway, weird they say they want DX9 cards, then after say...

"Important! EverQuest® II's minimum system requirement is a 1.0GHz CPU system with 512MB RAM and a GeForce2 class card with 64MB of video RAM. If you do not meet these minimum requirements, you will not be able to participate in our beta test."

Go figure. Ahh well, time to hit the crackpipe and wait untill I geg into WoW, EQ2 and Guild Wars.

Sigh Guildwars is far from a mmorpg, in fact besides the cities EVERYTHING is instanced. I fail to see how this is any different from diablo, though a large part of the blame is the assholes that are making it since they are hyping this as a mmorpg when even they admit its not.

from what I've read even if you don't buy an expansion a friend can still invite you to an expansion mission/land and you can still play together.

I don't think thats right. This is what I got off a Gamespot interview with the designer

Strain made it clear that they will not punish you if you don't purchase it and your friends do; you'll still be able to play with them, though you won't be able to experience the new content. But they're certainly hoping players will choose to pay in order to continue the story.

See, you won't be able to play the new content, but they'll still be able to play the old.

About Guild Wars - from what I've read even if you don't buy an expansion a friend can still invite you to an expansion mission/land and you can still play together. Their streaming tech allows for this without you actually having the CD. So it's not too much of an incentive to buy an expansion if you know your friend is going to.

And how come every game is now labeled vaporware just because it hasn't come out yet? PC games get delayed and cancelled a LOT, yes, but just because we have high-profile no-shows like DNF and Team Fortress 2 it doesn't mean that every game ever announced doesn't really exist. I can't imagine how a game like GW is labeled vaporware considering there are plenty of people currently testing the Alpha (check message boards) and I just downloaded the E3 demo for next week.

So cynical you people.
