Out of the Blue

Yup, it's a cold I have... the illusion that this was allergies prevented me from making proper use of that Cold-Eze stuff. Though since last time I used it the cold ended up choked off, but I ended up with a week-long sore throat, I'm a little dubious about it at this point anyway.

Heartfelt condolences to Raven's Kenn Hoekstra, whose .plan file describes the passing of his mom after a long fight with cancer, offering details on how to contribute to a memorial scholarship fund he is establishing in her name.

I hope Tony gives her something. The thing that is missing from the Sopranos now is the possiblitiy for redemption for Tony. That's what made the first season of the show so great - the idea that this killer could be saved. Every season since just hasn't been as good. Now it feels like they're just covering the same territory over and over again.

Who knows, I dont think valve has any idea themselves when its out, seems they feel the need to say "late summer" or "holidays" or not respond at all whenever someone asks, instead of doing like every other game developer, and just say "when its done"

At the end and once in the article before Gabes first quote it list HL2 as a holiday release.

Hell, I did terrible on that contest (My handle on Fark is gilligans_lil_buddy and I did the MST3K one). At least I got top 10 on the 'inappropriate jockey ads'! All in all it's good fun and there's a lot of creative people out there. There's some good themes coming up...

Condolences to Kenn...

I don't, I just get angry with overt, intentional stupidity.

I probably need to smoke some crack and relax, I know. Man, I just can't stop talking about crack after seeing Dave Chappelle's crack addict character, Tyrone Biggums. LOL!

SST:
"There was no abundant intentionality!"
This show is so versatile. Not only does it capture the rough language of the New Jersey mob, but it perfectly nails the pretentious pseudo-intellectual blather of college students. What a great show these writers could make set at a first-rate university. Plenty of opportunities for sex and conflict both between students and faculty.

Some more favorites from last night:

Meadow's anthropological analysis of conflict resolution among Italian criminal organizations.
"Do me a favor, hold this!" (SMASH!) "I saw that comin'! (laughs)"
The headstone with "PEEPS."
"Fuck the foot! It wasn't the fucking foot!"
Vito looking very very scary outside the porta-toilet. He's usually just comic in appearance. How'd they do that?
" . . . and as my parter told me, I AM carrying a full load."

Edit: Also have to mention that one of my dreams came true on Saturday. I saw the Pixies in concert in Palm Springs (I've seen Frank Black a half dozen times as well as Kim Deal's short-lived band the Amps). They played a very tight set of their most popular songs. Of course, there was no new material so no surprises but, oh those perfectly crafted songs! Hope they put out some new stuff.

If you're ever having a network problem, always check the cables first, no matter what you may think. Always. I know this, but do I do it? OF COURSE NOT, I bang my head against the wall for 3 days trying different solutions because I can ping the printer and nobody else can. Finally decide, there's nothing else to try, so I replace the cat-5 and bingo, everything is copasetic.

It's Miller Time.

Now now Halsy... DDI is just the resident right wing troll. We certainly have enough left wing trolls to balance him out around here

As for his statement -- yes, the government is fully capable of monitoring anyone it really wants to at the moment. There are some legal issues, but the PATRIOT act removed or castrated most of those. The obvious point is that most people won't ever do anything to be worth monitoring -- I'm sure that anyone monitoring me would be bored out of their minds. But that's not the point.

And as for monitoring everyone -- don't worry. It will be feasibly possible to dump all the data being output by ECHELON, CARNIVORE, or whatever other systems they have to a multi-petabyte array within a few years. At that point you'll be able to retroactively monitor someone, or do data mining for "suspicious activity". Go ahead, laugh if you like, but this exact system has been proposed (and, fortunately, shot down) twice now by the current administration.

And it's not a far stretch to think that a system like this, once in place, could be badly abused. Either on a personal level ("Hey Jim, I know what you did last night...") or a national one (and both parties are equally guilty of passing inane laws that turn a large portion of the populace into criminals). Not to mention the problems that will occur when mistakes are made -- feel free to ask other large database users about that (like, oh say, the credit agencies).

At one point the idea of processing that much data was completely infeasible -- we are talking about a massive amount of data with really wide and deep correlations. But distributed computing and storage, fast and cheap CPUs, and improved database technology have changed all that. If you'd like a case study, look at Google.
