Halo Custom Edition

Though there are still no indications that Halo 2 will make its way to the PC, yesterday's Bungie.net story on Halo editor plans (story) has vague mention of plans for a PC release of a "Halo Custom Edition." There is now an unofficial Halo CE FAQ on the Gearbox Forums (thanks HomeLAN Fed) clarifying, among other things, that this will not include any single player content. This project is fleshed out further in this GameSpy Q&A with Gearbox Software's Marc Tardif, where Marc describes the projects release as coming: "Very, very soon." Here's the deal:
First of all, it's not so much an update to the old software as a release of new software, which is free to Halo PC customers.

There are two parts to the new software. One part is a new executable and set of data called "Halo Custom Edition" (haloCE.exe) which will reside in its own separate directory. This new executable includes lots of new features, improvements, and capabilities. It's essentially a collection of many of the things the Gearbox Halo team has developed since the title launched.

Things included in the new executable are "Fast Shaders" (improves performance up to 60% on pixel shader hardware), improved network code (reduces the incidence of player "warping"), and lots of new features that provide options for players to improve their multiplayer games. Perhaps, most importantly, however, the new executable allows end users to play a potentially endless volume of new content created with the Halo Editing Kit.

The other part is the Halo Editing Kit (HEK). The HEK is an exciting package of tools, source material and tutorials that will allow modification makers to bring their own visions to life within the Halo engine.

Halo Custom Edition (HaloCE.exe) and the supporting data is about 200mb and the HEK is about 250mb.

Why bother?

the games been out for an age, its been slated due to its massive repeating levels, crap netcode and graphics performance.

the ONLY thing that could redeem it now is co-op, and in the like 6-7 months since the game was released, all they have managed to do is produce 550meg of files that offer performance increases and better net code, stuff that SHOULD have been in there from the beggining. and how in gods name can that take up that much space????

add co-op and people will give a toss, otherwise NO ONE CARES, WE ALL PLAY FAR-CRY AND PAINKILLER.

thank you.

I spent about three straight weeks trying to tend to the Halo Troubleshooting forums over on Gearbox's website. I attempted to engage the developers in a dialogue on numerous occasions through PM's and was essentially stonewalled. The game engine was just so flawed that any sort of patching was a monumental task apparently.

Part of the 'promises' made early on was the release of an SDK...something that they kept talking about for well over two months, repeatedly stating that they were still under contract by Microsoft to provide full support until January. Well January 30th came and went, a few patches arrived in between, but nothing of significance.

It certainly killed idealism for game developers.

Do either of those games have co-op?

Well, I'm certainly going to buy this game now since I haven't played it yet on any platform.

no, neither of them do, however, both are newer faster engines, with development kits either out or on their way.

why would anyone bother with modding halo when you could mod far-cry for instance.

I brought halo, played it, returned it to the store. co-op would have made it a great game IMO

Yeah, it made the XBox version great. I'm glad I played it there instead of staying pissed at Bungie. When Halo2 comes out on the XBox I'll play it as well.

i played it through on the xbox in co-op, which was pretty cool, its just a shame that there are so few co-op games for pc, its the one thing we complain about at the lan parties me and my friends hold. we could always get an xbox in i suppose but not really the same.

Apparently you wont be able to see any of these improvements in single player, and there is nothing about coop. I dont have the game but i hope it improves the multi and a lot more people get it.

Honestly...I played through Halo and its really just ok not great many PC FPS (NOLF2 TRON 2.0) are much better. Look at the repeating areas WTF is with that? I got sick of the game after the Library and having to fight the same mobs in the same room a 100 times.

This game is waaaaaay over rated.

I didnt rate Halo much on PC either. It werent that brilliant on xbox to me as well. I wouldnt call it the best console FPS but yeah its alright. Exhumed on Sega Saturn is better in my opinion but that might be my rose tinted specs coming into play.

Goldeneye was good on N64 too, but as is case with most console FPS games - they dont have that cutting edge control responses to make them great.

Stick them on PC with decent control and it shows them for what they are - generic and not a match for PC Designed FPS games.

Halo lasted about 1-2 hours of gameplay time and i uninstalled it on PC.

Who wants to mod for an engine which is slow, out of date and has crap netcode? Why not go for an engine which can be modded now, looks better, has more modding capabilities and runs better on-LAN/line? And not to mention one which has much better dev support.

Halo has the best FPS single player experience of any game available, including Far Cry. Its MP sux and I hope the modding tools will help in that department.

Halo had the best FPS single-player experience of any game available? Yeah. Keep hitting the crackpipe, pal. Halo sucked.

It wasn't the best, but it definitely didn't suck either. Although, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I enjoyed the SP campaign, but playing co-op is what gave it more replayability. I can't even remember how many times I played through it in co-op..
