English Gothic II Add-on in Doubt?

A post to the JoWooD Gothic Forums by Iomar Eisenwolf, one of the board moderators, follows-up on a post to that thread translating a German interview that states the developers at Piranha Bytes are currently solely concentrating on Gothic III. Concerned about the implications this news holds for the English version of the Night of the Raven add-on for Gothic II, Iomar's inquiries have lead to discouraging news: "Bad news concerning the addon. I've talked with Plex if there will be an english [sic] version of the addon (Nacht des Raben), and he said that's a very difficult question. Many political problems are here within and it's not sure if there will be ever an english addon. this is out of the hands of JoWooD and Atari doesn't respond. Seems that the addon is temporary on ice or it died long before." Thanks RPGDot.

Egg on my face

I been searching around and there is a project to translate NotR to English.
Also a Russian site had figured out how to install the German NotR onto the Gothic 2 UK version.
Apparently the tranlastion project in nearing completion, YAY.
You can read about this here
http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=83487

Also apparently the new publisher, Koch Media is selling the NotR, German version at a UK game outlet.

Can it be that hard for someone to hack the gothic2 addon into the Gothic II game?

And then translate the text?

Hmm.. I'll better downnload the german version and see what I can come up with.

Im not saying the developers have to but Someone has to translate the text, to make a patch and it has to be done on the German version of Gothic 2 and NotR, its not compatable with English versions.
The voice recording was reported starting back in Sept 03.
Also it was reported last week on the JoWood board that, JoWood got a new publisher, Koch Media for UK and possibly they would do a UK version.

1. JoWood = Late releases R' Us. I

2. You can use WASD in the game, I certainly do, but the camera is a real killer. There are obvious problems with its movement and sensitivity, but the game's perspective is off as well; it curves a bit too much.

3. The game is good for any third-person/first-person RPG fan, although it does have its rough edges. I would love to play a RPG with the scope of Morrowind, the immediate gameplay of Gothic 2, and designed by Bioware.

4. What would the expansion entail? Like Morrowind, although not nearly as bad, my character was essentially a god by the end of the game.

5. <ahem> Could I just add one more small part? Well....NO MORE FREAKING PLANT/HERB COLLECTING, DAMN IT!. <ahem> I am ok now...

Thinking Gothic 2 did miss out on a number of timely sales,
Ray

Wait, if they did the English voice acting, then why can't we get the UK version of it from JoWooD?

Edit: Well, I mean why can't we get a UK version when it is released. Can't JoWooD do that since they released the German version? That is if they actually have the English voice acting complete.

"English voice acting was done in London"

You are breaking my heart man. I did not need to hear that.

I hadn't realized so many people also bought it overseas after waiting so long. I wonder if that impacted US sales that much and caused Atari to think it wasn't a good seller (I am not certain of sales #s on this, so it might have not been a good seller anyways, if that's possible).

Foolish, foolish publisher. If we don't get the third game because of this I'd go balistic. Here's hoping for the best...

And to those guys who were not happy with the controls in the series. Generally the displeasure from that comes from misunderstanding. When I first played it as well I though "Where the hell is my WASD and strafing, hacking, action?" The developers wanted to eliminate the circle running and jumping around, and bring the combat down to a face to face fight. (Because people in a sword fight don't really try to run circles around each other). Once I realize that a developer is trying to do something different, I can mentally abandon my preconceived expectations and go with thier flow. If you try the game again with an open mind, don't try to play it like your general third-person action game and see what I'm talking about. You definitely won't regret it.

From what I heard quite a while ago all the English voice acting was done in London for Night of The Raven. It's all held up because Atari owns the distribution rights to it.

So it's not about the developers doing something in terms of translating it to English, their hands are tied. It's going to take someone from the outside to hack us up a patch to translate the text for us.

Easily one of the biggest gaming disappointments for 2004. Was eagerly awaiting it's release after finishing Gothic 2. Who didn't order it from overseas? Is the real question. Atari had poor poor sales on the US release; the fans already bought the bloody thing abroad. Atari=Dumb and Dumber on this one.

you can find it online. Amazon has it but you might be able to find it cheaper somewhere else.

By far one of the best games I've ever played.

You can find links to places to buy Gothic 1, here do a serch for "buy", I even see a thread devoted to this topic on the first or 2nd page.
http://forum.jowood.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=100

You would have to translate the text from the whole Gothic 2 game and Night of the Raven addon. The German version of NotR is Not compatable with the English version of Gothic 2 , sadly
So you would have to buy the German version of Gothic 2 and Night of the Raven, then translate them both, that is no simple task.
There is a Russian translation of NotR around.

I also had gogamer.com ship me a copy of Gothic II to the States. Gothic I and II are my favorite RPGs of all time (although the first King's Field on the PSone runs a close third).

Bring on Gothic III!

Best RPG ever made - makes morrowind's stilted dialog trees and vacant world seem unfinished - at least they could farm this out - just swap dialog and speech!

Maybe some bilingual german hacker will work his magic for the fans...

The first post has a good idea. Why not just a patch to make the dialogue readable in English? Then they could release it here *with subtitles*. Yes I'm serious, and I know it sounds kind of whacky. I would buy it though.

I bought it from the UK months before it was available here.

Ah, well that makes 3 of us (including Ludomancer). I didn't know how long it would take for the US version to be released so I also got the UK version from GoGamer at least 3 or 4 months before it was released in the US. I'll do it with G3 too if Atari decides to wait again.

Another one-liner from RazorWynd.. I know he's in a hurry to reach 1000.

I preferred the Gothic 1 control scheme:

arrow keys (run/look/use - right hand), left ctrl (action -left pinky), spacebar (draw/put away weapon - left thumb), z (strafe left - left middle finger), x (strafe right - left index finger). That's it. Never ever had to screw with the mouse. It was a very comfortable control scheme, IMO.

On the other hand, if you want to use the mouse look and wasd, you can map the keys.

I still can't get over the fact that some serious pc gamers missed out on this game. What a shame.

It's really too bad that something as basic as the control config would make someone uninstall a game like this. Both Gothic 1 and 2 have to be the best RPG's ever. Raised the bar, IMO. I'd also go so far as to say that Gothic 1 is up there for one of the best pc games of all time. Just the flow of the game itself was almost perfect. I can't say that for most singleplayer games. I'd recommend this game to anyone, not just rpg fans... because it's definitely not D&D.

I've heard so many complaints about this game in the past, but 99.9% of the time, the gamer doesn't know what he's talking about. Seriously.

Can't wait for G3!!
