Out of the Blue

Wish me luck... we're having a guy come by today to tell us what the story is on our roof, which has started to fall down on its primary job of keeping the rain on the outside of the house. Oh who am I kidding? Luck won't matter here... when's the last time someone said "Oh, don't worry, that's the cheap kind of roof repair!"?

Really hope it's the BIOS. Otherwise I'm flummuxed. I guess I can test the DVD+/-RW drive to make sure it's good. After that I'll have to talk to Newegg about RMAs.

Step #1.

Turn off virus protection in the bios (most likely culprit), and install. In case of failure go to step #2

Step #2 Verify the cd is not damaged in some way, either use another CD if you have one or try and get into the repair menu (but do not do anything though!) on another working computer. In case of failure go to step #3.

Step #3 Verify the cd-rom is working correctly and or replace. If case of failure go to step #4.

Step #4 You did not do step #1 correctly, as that is going to be your problem, go back to step #1.

Really hope it's the BIOS.

What is your boot order?

I think I had to not only enable boot from CD but place it second in line in order for mine to boot from CD.

But that was an ASUS motherboard.

Good luck.

Make sure your IDE cables are installed the right way

The cables, mb, and drive are all keyed. I did check that last night though, just in case.

Also, some mobo have a maximum cable length

Using the cables that came with the mb, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Really hope it's the BIOS. Otherwise I'm flummuxed. I guess I can test the DVD+/-RW drive to make sure it's good. After that I'll have to talk to Newegg about RMAs.

Are you getting past POST?

Motherboard?

Is your CD-Rom in the secondary IDE channel? Is it set to Master, slave or cable.

Mine was set to cable and it would not boot until I set it to master.

Make sure your IDE cables are installed the right way. You used to be able to flip flop them (either end could be plugged into the mobo, handy if you had a drive close to the mobo, and another drive at the top of the case), but you can't do that now. I spent 3 hours once on a machine, until I finally figured this out...at 2:30 in the morning.

Also, some mobo have a maximum cable length. For mine, the IDE cables couldn't be longer than 18 inches.

Consider yourself slapped.

Consider? That doesn't sound like it was actually done then. Harumph.

Are you getting past POST?

Yes, it's putting up "Boot from CD / Press any key to boot from CD.." and then locks. It's been recommended that I update the BIOS, since someone else had this same problem and solved it that way. I'll try it tonight.

Mine was set to cable and it would not boot until I set it to master.

I'm so glad they ironed out all the bugs from IDE a few years back... oh, hold it... they didn't!

Yeah, it's set to master, the cables are all secure, etc.

Mobo, btw, is a Chaintech ZNF3-150. I can't really pass judgement on it as far as stability yet, and there's a good bit of grousing in the forums about poor BIOSes, but damn... this sucker came with a crapload of stuff. After having fully assembled the system I found the 4-in-1 screwdriver they included with the mobo. This is after having used the included round IDE cables, round floppy cable, front panel display w/ ports (2 USB, firewire, audio in/out, diagnostic display), and zip ties. And there's a bunch more cables and other stuff that I didn't use. Just hope the board is as good quality as the packaging.

It seems every other day that I post some Microsoft related query, but this one is really really annoying me. I recently "upgraded" to Office 2003 (from OfficeXP) and part of my work involves reading word documents and powerpoint slides with MS Equation things in them, and simpler things such as bullet points. Unfortunately, since installing O2003, all these symbols display incorrectly, and even bullet points appear as an arrow rather than a bullet (although bullet is clearly clicked as default and is highlighted). So an equation that should read as a series of greek symbols, indices, and other math-geek things reads as a bunch of bicycle symbols, lightning and random triangles.
Double clicking the equation gives me "the server, source file or application cannot be found, make sure the application hasn't been removed, uninstalled or renamed" and that's useless. I have gone back to OfficeXP and I still get it. This is extraordinarily annoying.

Edit: I solved the problem! Turns out Championship Manager installs a font called Symbol that has no characters in it. A simple reinstall was all that was necessary.

I got pulled over on new years eve and the cop asked me

"son, have ya done anything, drinking or drugs?"

and I told him

"well its only 8pm, so nope, not yet."

They took my girlfriends ID along with mine after that, they thought she was underage and she's older than me. Heh, I had a missing headlight.

I've noticed I only get pulled over when i'm not doing anything, nowadays. I still don't like passing cops or having them behind me, I think they brainwash us while we sleep to fear them.

Enough that when I get pulled over for speeding, I make damn sure my hands are at 10 and 2, and end every sentence with "Sir"
That's about 180 degrees from the way it is up here, for me anyway. I haven't been pulled over in a few years now (cut down on my speeding), but when I have been, I've never felt threatened or uncomfortable (except by the fact that I could get a multi-hundred dollar ticket). The cops I've dealt with have been condescending pricks, don't get me wrong, but I have never once been in fear of them. I can't be the only one.

Oh, and I've never called a cop 'sir', nor will I.

Just dumped $6300 on a new roof...Setting today with only felt topside...crossed fingers...

First off, hope you don't live in the mid-atlantice/north east. Otherwise you were bound to get wet. Our roof leaked today. Right at the spot were the chimney has been hacked off for the room above the garage. One call to our contractor and he was out tarping it off.

Did/do you:

Have a very steeply pitched roof?

Need to have a ton of plywood replaced?

Get your soffit, facia and gutters replaced as well?

Select expensive shingles?

$6300 sounds like some of the above are happening.

I hope it is because you picked out those spiffy architectural shingles I could not afford.

Regardless, good luck!

American cops are nothing but thugs with badges. This attack was a purely "how dare you challenge my authority, now I'll teach you a lesson" attack that is way too common in the U.S.

I wouldn't say "all" (nor did WebDemon, not trying to put words in his mouth) but I've seen more than I care to. Enough that when I get pulled over for speeding, I make damn sure my hands are at 10 and 2, and end every sentence with "Sir". (Actually, every time I see someone pulled over, I have flashbacks to Rodney King, but that's another story.)
