Morning Q&As

  • Battlefield Vietnam
The Battlefield Vietnam Q&A on FileFront talks with Aj Marini, lead designer on the shooter sequel: "We implemented many of the cutting edge graphical effects that have been showcased in other upcoming first person shooters. HomeLAN Fed's Heroes Of The Pacific Q&A chats with Ben Palmer from IR Gurus, developers on the just-announced World War II aerial combat game: "We have carried out a lot of research so far and built up an extensive WW2 library. We’ve also been using the US Navy’s archives to get more accurate information of what transpired during some of the campaigns and the mammoth battles of the period. More importantly, we are also talking to some of the pilots who actually fought in the Pacific campaign, both from the United States and Japan."
  • DRIV3R

  • U.S. Army & There
US Army reveals its There-based simulation on GameSpot offers a Q&A on an MMO simulation created for the U.S. Army by There, Inc, though there are no plans for a commercial release: "No. Massively multiplayer games cost a lot of money to develop--about $20 million, and we didn’t have that money. There Inc. had developed this environment that was very, very flexible with venture capital money. So, in this case, we thought, "Why don’t we use the platform?" and since we didn’t have to worry about AI (artificial intelligence) so much since it’s a role-playing game..."

Yup, no question there, Far Cry has amazing graphics.

I wasn't expecting a whole lot from BF:V re: graphics, in fact I though they would be on par with 1942's, so I guess I didn't have high expectations. The game is fun, but we'll see if it can hold my attention for 2 years like 1942 did.

As I mentioned, no crashes (yet), but much like with 1942, if you get on a server with over 38 or so players, server side lag seems to be an issue. At least I think it's server side as my ping is indicated to be <100 and I get the old one step forward 2 steps back routine on servers with a higher player capacity.

DedEye, I agree with you on the multiplayer aspect. As far as Far Cry goes, the graphics just blow Vietnam away. I guess I was hoping for a bit MORE eye candy in Vietnam than was present.

I picked up the game yesterday and played for 6 hours with no crashes (?).

I too am an avid BF:1942 player, and while this is the same game in a different setting, I find the increased mobility adds a new slant on it.

Far Cry does not provide the same online experience.

Good choice. I don't recommend it. I was an avid 1942 player and was very much looking forward to this game. It was a very big let down. I recommend Vietcong if you want a truly immersive Vietnam themed game. If you simply want lush environments and great graphics, go Far Cry.

typical BFV experience:

play 10 minz, game crash's to desktop
reconnect
play 10 minz, game disconnect's
reconnect
play 10 minz, get kicked out of server for no reason
reconnect
play 10 minz, game reboot's pc

dumb interviews later. patch n0w!!

I notice they bring up the vegetation graphical effect. Shame its procedurally drawn and some M60 toting twat at the other side of the river bank can see you hiding in the grass being able to snipe you.

Its a useless graphic feature that is used to tart up screenshots when in the actual game its nothing but a waste of resources when you cant use it to its effect.

For the vehicles, we took our cue from the accounts of the battles. Eye witnesses recounted how a particular vehicle stood out in a battle, so we included them in the game.

Didn't realize there were so many armored vehicles at X-Ray and Albany, I guess General Moore must be getting senile.
