Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed Details

LucasArts has revealed details about the promised Jump to Lightspeed expansion that will add spaceflight to their massively multiplayer Star Wars game, saying to expect the add-on this fall:
LUCASARTS ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF STAR WARS GALAXIES(r): JUMP TO LIGHTSPEED

Marin County, Calif. - April 21, 2004 - The struggle between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance extends into space with Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed, the first expansion for the award-winning Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing game set in the Star Wars(r) universe. Releasing in fall 2004 for the PC, this highly anticipated addition will dramatically expand the Star Wars Galaxies franchise by providing players more than 15 different vehicles for space exploration and combat.

Starfighters and other starships will be featured in the expansion that can be used for both space exploration and combat, allowing players to join up with allies and fly familiar X-wings and TIE fighters into battle against faction-aligned opponents and AI-controlled ships. Transport ships similar to the well-known Millennium Falcon will also be added into the game, allowing players to venture through space with friends aboard.

Set in the Star Wars timeframe between Episode IV and Episode V, this first extension to the Star Wars Galaxies foundation opens 10 vast and distinct space sectors, spanning from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim, for players to explore while engaging their opponents in intense real-time combat or uniting with friends in battle or exploration. Players can embark on more than 100 new missions, venturing through asteroid fields, nebulae and space junkyards while honing skills in four new space-specific professions. The game also features two new and completely customizable species.

Since its launch in June 2003, Star Wars Galaxies has allowed players to live the Star Wars saga and become immersed in the classic Star Wars universe simultaneously. Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed continues the full immersion in the greatest Star Wars saga ever told: Yours.

Two or three weeks ago SOE opened the SWG forums to the public. Read only of course.

I don't agree with not allowing the general public to read their forums.

I also think that ONCE a subscriber you should be able to post even if you later cancel your subscription.

Otherwise the only people posting are the new and the blinkered if a product is crap.

Seems like a pretty good endorsement to me ^_^"
@ El_Cristoir,

And Celine Dion sells 10,000,000 records a year. No accounting for taste. Plus, UO eventually fixed everything that made it a coaster of the year before it ever reached those numbers. So, your comment is irrelevant..

Don't be so sure, that's a very nice solution to the problem with differences in levels between friends' characters you outline there... =)

Here's crossing my fingers the gameplay will be as good as I remember X-Wing vs Tie playing on a LAN.

"man i hope you guys are under 20"

Why? is it because we dont want to be stupid enough for being burned TWICE by Sony?

We already wasted 50 bucks on this piece of shit 6 months ago so perhaps maybe we learned our lesson?

Oh... yuck... so you have to grind time in the regular game to be able to fly the ships in this expansion huh? Well that settles that.. heh.

seriously, for anyone saying they want to check it out when this expansion is released, you might want to get started now. it's going to take you a while to get there, i'm sure.

i remember i started playing again when the vehicles were announced. took forever to finally get one and the novelty wore off in about a day. plus it pisses me off how they just magically appear out of your "datapad". not sure how they should have handled that instead, but i think i'd like to see some kind of parking lot, or something. heh.

I wonder if they realize that TIE Fighters dont have hyperdrives... that will be fun... flying around at a crawl while X-Wings etc jump all over the place.

If you're "honing skills in four new space-specific professions," wouldn't you have to start over with a noob character to get these professions? I could be wrong since I quit SWG a long time ago, but you'd think if you had to start over new to use a space-based profession, you'd need to be able to start in space immediately, IE starting with a ship already. Maybe a crappy one but a ship nonetheless. I just might give it another look if that were the case, since I had originally started SWG to basically have cash for a ship when this pack came out. Anyone know anything about this? I can be hopeful lol.

So you'll have to grind to get the skills to pilot the ship, grind to get the money for the ship. I highly doubt they'd just "give you a ship" as much fun as that would be, cause if they did I'd go back to SWG just for this expansion after seening the demonstration of it at Celebration II in Indy.

I'm holding out for the free trial of CoH (if one indeed comes out).

Is that the addon won't be like planetside. Remember this is a MMORPG. So you'll have to grind to get the skills to pilot the ship, grind to get the money for the ship. I highly doubt they'd just "give you a ship" as much fun as that would be, cause if they did I'd go back to SWG just for this expansion after seening the demonstration of it at Celebration II in Indy.

Is anyone forgetting that they said long ago that the space expansion would be "Arcade-like" and not "Larry Holland sim-like"

SWG can kiss my ass. It was fun to Beta, but not good enough to actually pay a monthly fee for. (but to be fair, currently no game is worth a monthly fee in my opinion). They went against everything they said the Jedi would be. crafting is a joke, making snacks makes you a master engineer. And the economy is a joke.

As for their boards, they can still make it so that owners can post, non-owners should still be able to peruse the boards.

the fact that they don't speaks volumes.
