Starsiege TRIBES & TRIBES 2 for Free

Sierra sends word of plans to release both Starsiege Tribes and TRIBES 2, the groundbreaking first-person shooter and its follow-up, for free. Here's the deal:
Vivendi Universal Games announced today that it will be distributing the videogames Starsiege®: Tribes® and Tribes 2 for free on a special-edition DVD-ROM bundled with the newsstand edition of the June issue of Computer Gaming World magazine and online via FilePlanet.com. The giveaway is meant to celebrate the fourth-quarter release of Tribes: Vengeance, the next installment in the venerable Tribes franchise of PC action games.

The special versions of these games will be available in the June issue of Computer Gaming World, which will hit newsstands starting May 4, 2004, and will be simultaneously accessible for online download through FilePlanet.com.

Released in 1998, Starsiege: Tribes was the first major online-only first-person action game. The combination of team-based gameplay, expansive outdoor terrains, multiple play modes, customizable characters, and controllable vehicles created a game that was an instant hit among fans and press alike. Its sequel, Tribes 2, was released in 2001 and further refined the genre, winning numerous industry awards. Together, both games have sold nearly a million copies worldwide.

I'd love to play again but I barely remember all the tricks and primo skiing routes, plus I'd have to gather together about a dozen decent scripts for both games. Still have both CD's though.

Without a doubt two of the funnest games I have EVER played (mostly because they were games I excelled at). Boy I miss my T1 clan. Good times.

Typical that they'll use that crappy fileplanet shit. They should have set up a bittorrent server instead.

@Nomarr

After Sierra laid off everyone at this talented company a lot of these guys tried their best to make a go at being their own developers. After a couple of years though there are only a few of them left such as Bravetree, Pipeworks, Tesseraction and Buzz Monkey.

Also you cannot forget about GarageGames and the great work that they continue to do to support indepedent games and game development, although technicly they left well before Sierra axed the prized cow that was Dynamix.

Does fileplanet have subscriber-only content? I thought it just gave them better access to the servers? Oh well.

You get some exclusive content, like a 14-day trial of Planetside or something like that. Every now and then there is a demo or beta that will be exclusive for a week then it'll open up to the public.

I pay the fee so that I don't have to deal with long strings of pop ads, site redirects, overloaded servers, slow download speed and the knowledge that whatever file I'm looking for WILL be there. Haven't tried BitTorrent yet so I don't know how much better that is to Fileplanet but I do know that Fileplanet is a far better site than all the other gaming file sites I've ever had to use.

Oh and by the way I think Gamespy.com has a shit editorial staff, Gamespy Arcade is a redundant app that has no function in a day when built in server browsers are the norm and the Gamespy community is made up of a bunch of 12 year old dumb asses. I still like Fileplanet though.

That's really cool of them to do. As someone who LOVED the originals, I think it's great that they're putting that content out there now as (more or less) public domain. It can only help the franchise.

Bravo. And other publishers please take note.

Tribes 2 was awesome until we lost the password...

Haha! That just happened to me recently. Since 2003 was such a suckass year (IMHO) I tried to re-install T2 but I can't remember my pw either, but oh well, they are going to give it away free so I can just make a new account :). Thank you UT2K4 ONS for holding me over, sorry, but won't be needing you much longer!

What ever happened to those Tribes guys at Dynamix? Did they stay together and form a new company? What games are they making now? Anyone know?

I can't heap any more praise on the Tribes games than I've already read. I have some of the CTF matches I played years ago still embedded in my brain down to the last detail. I just want to note that in addition to being kick-ass games, the original Tribes game engine was a masterpiece. I played it for years and never remember one hiccup. The netcode was perfect and the framerate always playable.

Does fileplanet have subscriber-only content? I thought it just gave them better access to the servers? Oh well.

If it's available elsewhere, I rather suspect it would not be legal. This isn't like a game demo situation -- Sierra have not released the Tribes games as freeware, and most likely CGW and fileplanet have both paid good money for the rights to distribute them in order that they will both generate more business, so it seems unlikely that any other legal distribution channels will appear.

REMOVE YOUR FUCKING SPEC-SIG SHITFACE!

_WE DONT CARE!!_

God you guys are so annoying.

Oh, and moreover, fp sucks. You suck. 10 dollar a month for demodownloading, and that is okay? And I'm thinking the server has more than 2.11 mbis, that's nothing.

As someone who only recently retired from T2 and has periodically re-installed T1, I'm not so sure the average console-monkeys first experience with the series will be a positive one. For those who have played the games before, you'll remember the learning curve was exceptionally steep. T2 has only gotten faster in gameplay since release, and the T1 vets are, well... quite seasoned by now.
I almost feel sorry for those players who will be installing T1/T2 for the first time. Those too stubborn to quit and become somewhat proficient are in for a real test of character. >:)

It doesn't exactly say fileplanet exclusive so maybe you can still download it for free from fileplanet. Also I'd imagine it to be spread as a torrent anyways.

no other download service comes even close. That Kind of bandwith costs money and you jackasses who think everything should be given to you free need to get a Clue and Shut up.

This statement MIGHT have been true two years ago.

However, today (and most notably, I'm referring to bittorrent), there is zero excuse for a fileplanet-only demo... A bittorrent release would require zero bandwidth on their part, and would give perfectly good (I can easily get over 500 kb/sec on even torrents with a few users, on popular stuff i'ts way higher) downloads to everyone.

If you want to pay $10 a month to get things that you should be able to get for free, go ahead, but there's no reason people should be FORCED to pay it to download something.

Guess what Hellbinder, I'm not paying money for a demo.
It's ridiculous that anybody would in the broadband age. A demo is made available to give the would-be consumer a taste of the product and lure him into buying, which is also known as advertising. I'm not gonna throw money around screaming, "give me all your advertisements!"

This is awesome
I wanted to actually reinstall and play T2 the other day to find out my CD was beyond repair sigh.

Dynamix owned.
I would always by Dynamix games from Red Baron to T2.

As soon as it's available on Fileplanet I'm grabbing and playing, I hope there is a revival of good servers.
And I can actually play it on MAX detail.
