UT2004 Bonus Maps

XP Extras on GameSpot DLX (registration required) now offers downloads of the promised UT2004 bonus Onslaught mode maps, which seem to require Windows XP. Here's the deal: "Take the UT2004's massive Onslaught battles to new planets with these two additional maps designed by Epic Games. ONS-Ascendancy and ONS-Aridoom transport you to Tarydium crystal mines and age-old mesas littered with tank shells in this bonus pack exclusively for Windows XP." The 12 MB download is mirrored on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, and Gamer's Hell, while the mirror on Worthplaying is recompiled for use on all versions of Windows.

Their stupid little DLX Secure Downloader is not working for me (using XP Pro and IE 6). It downloaded and installed the little plug-in, pops up a window, and then nothing.

Note to MS: making bonus packs inaccessible behind broken OS-specific downloading schemes is a lousy advertisement X|.

I hope someone can mirror this somewhere, unless the map licenses prohibit it...

Hahahahaha! Talk about a desperate attempt by the evil empire!

Is this the best they can do to try to shovel that crap operating system down our throats?

Clearly nobody needs windows XP. Now game companies are having their arms twisted to do the Dark one's bidding? WTF!?!

I'll just wait an hour or two until someone makes the workaround distribution for it.

If you don't have the map, and you play on a server that switches to it, do you get booted, or do you download the map like in the UT days?

Hey, looks like you overestimated the time by several hours!
the workaround came out 7 minutes after you posted that.

Meh, I don't see what everyone's getting in a huff about. If you can get the files post-download and run them in something other than XP, great. If you can't, is it really that big a deal? Just seems overly dramatic to get your panties in a twist because of some little "exclusivity" thing.

People don't have Windows XP on modern computers?

No - most savvy gamers prefer not to install a bloated piece of turd on their computers. I am sticking with Win2K - at least I don't have to deal with product activation or the endless adds to sign on to Passport and Hotmail every time I turn on my computer.

Yes you download it, it will just take a while, depending on your connection.

that a company with the current respect of the community such as Epic has to do this kind of fucking crap. I mean, monolith, meh, but Epic?

Anyways, it's great to see the Community once again giving a big hearty fuck you to Microsoft, and removing this shit a full eleven minutes after it was released.

Maybe SOMEDAY, at SOME point in time, publisher will realise that this kind of bullshit just doesn't wash, and they'll stop their "exclusive for Windows xxxx only!!", and even stop their useless copy protection schemes (that prevent legitimate customers from playing their game.), and will embrace the idea of a NO CD .exe

We can only hope?

In fairness to Epic, these maps were not released by them. The maps are fan-created, although neither Gamespot nor Microshaft mention it anywhere. Maps are supposedly high quality though - as the creators also made some maps that shipped on the retail CD/DVD

Anyone got a non-registration mirror?

And what's with Windows XP REQUIRED? Not that I don't have windoze XP, but I would think it should say "Retail version of Unreal Tournament 2004 required"? Why is it OS-dependant?

he endless adds to sign on to Passport and Hotmail every time I turn on my computer.

Oh please.

I installed XP Pro on my PC and XP Home on my wife's. Maybe there was some request to have something to do with Passport during install, but that was it (and I don't even recall that). No "endless" adds [sic].

Nor is it any more bloated than Win2k (which isn't exactly the paragon of efficient computing either), and it's considerably more stable than 98SE (and I say this as someone who had few problems with that).

Yes, the product activation annoys the crap out of me, but that's an issue with the company. And, yes, I think MS is the evil empire incorporated, but if you're going to sling insults, at least be sure they're truthful.

Because Gamespot is in bed with Microsoft. Nothing more, nothing less. And the only bit that's OS dependant is the crappy ass installer.

Anyone running UT2k4 on non-XP Windows, or Linux, or OS X can download from worthplaying and unzip it to get the exact same content (the WP file appears to be a zip, not an exe, so even though they say "all Windows" it's really "all platforms").

The point, however, remains -- it is a slimy thing to do, and there's going to be some people who will think they can't get it at all because they don't run XP.

hmm, I run XP pro, never had a hotmail "add", never had a passport "add" nor ad, and never had any product activation, unless you are refering to cd-keys for individual products. If you are using Win2k as a gaming platform, you've got your own issues.
