UT2004 Bonus Maps

XP Extras on GameSpot DLX (registration required) now offers downloads of the promised UT2004 bonus Onslaught mode maps, which seem to require Windows XP. Here's the deal: "Take the UT2004's massive Onslaught battles to new planets with these two additional maps designed by Epic Games. ONS-Ascendancy and ONS-Aridoom transport you to Tarydium crystal mines and age-old mesas littered with tank shells in this bonus pack exclusively for Windows XP." The 12 MB download is mirrored on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, and Gamer's Hell, while the mirror on Worthplaying is recompiled for use on all versions of Windows.

For $40 bucks, you cant go wrong. But once D3 shipped, UT's numbers go down the tubes.

I don't know.. we'll see about that. I'm only interested in the SP portion of D3.

I thought UT2K3 wasn't nearly as fast as Q3, but that's my perspective.

Agreed, UT2k3 was considerably slower than UT1 or Q3.

The WinXP exclusive thing is bullshit, but mirrors were available immediately. What's really a pain in the ass is how servers running these maps will not auto-download for people without them. Something about how they're flagged as "official" or whatever.

Anyway, great maps. Aridoom has a cool post apocalyptic Road Warrior feel. It's especially fun with the Vehicle Invasion mutator, defending a desert outpost from an army of creatures Starship Troopers style.

In fairness to Epic, these maps were not released by them. The maps are fan-created, although neither Gamespot nor Microshaft mention it anywhere.

I stand corrected.

I am a quaker. The past UTs have had sloppy controls/netcode and typically catered to the people who couldn't compete with quakers.

To be quite honest, since most of the quakers are keeping themselves occupied with the less than Carmacked games out till DOOM3/Quake4 ships, our boredom is eased with UT2004's suprisingly tighter feel. It's about time Epic, good job. For $40 bucks, you cant go wrong. But once D3 shipped, UT's numbers go down the tubes.

I also am an ID player/fan/etc.
This is the first UT game that I have bought that has spent more than 1 week on my 'puter.
I love onslaught. Check out the demo first.

While the conventional gametypes like Deathmatch may seem like they are "designed for kids who take crack," Onslaught is much more team focused and certainly has a slower pace to it compared to deathmatch.

It does not mean you can twiddle you thumbs and bide your time for a good opportunity, mind you. You still have to work fast to capture all the nodes. But it is not the twitch fest that deathmatch sometimes can be.

Anyway, UT2K4 is identical to 2K3 with the exception of a few new weapons and the Onslaught mode with its vehicles.

I never was much of a fan of 2K3 myself, but I bought 2K4.

Best test of whether you'll like it? The demo. Give it a try.

I hated UT2003. I thought the weapons were spammy and lame, the speed was designed for kids who take crack. I like fast games, but this one seemed over the top. However, I'm a big ID game player (Quake 1,2,3). Is UT2004 different enough from 2003 that it's worth trying?

Only 12MB for two maps? They must not be too big.

After unzipping, the maps are 20MB and 17MB, which makes them the two largest ONS maps (if anyone really cares).

Edit: And by largest I mean in terms of MB, just to clarify.

In fairness to Epic, these maps were not released by them. The maps are fan-created, although neither Gamespot nor Microshaft mention it anywhere. Maps are supposedly high quality though - as the creators also made some maps that shipped on the retail CD/DVD

It's all about the textures...if they use nothing but textures from the full version of the game, it keeps the download small...

he endless adds to sign on to Passport and Hotmail every time I turn on my computer

hmm, I run XP pro, never had a hotmail "add", never had a passport "add" nor ad, and never had any product activation, unless you are refering to cd-keys for individual products. If you are using Win2k as a gaming platform, you've got your own issues.
