UT2004 Bonus Maps

XP Extras on GameSpot DLX (registration required) now offers downloads of the promised UT2004 bonus Onslaught mode maps, which seem to require Windows XP. Here's the deal: "Take the UT2004's massive Onslaught battles to new planets with these two additional maps designed by Epic Games. ONS-Ascendancy and ONS-Aridoom transport you to Tarydium crystal mines and age-old mesas littered with tank shells in this bonus pack exclusively for Windows XP." The 12 MB download is mirrored on 3D Gamers, Adrenaline Vault, and Gamer's Hell, while the mirror on Worthplaying is recompiled for use on all versions of Windows.

There is a small open-source program that I wrote for fixing the new ONS maps so clients can download them on the fly. It is simple and straightforward. It verifies the 4 signature bytes that signify a UT package file, then it changes the appropriate flag. The flag is a 32-bit integer at offset 8. Take a look at the source if you are interested, else just run either the linux or win32 binaries.

Usage (Linux):
./tagger map1.ut2 map2.ut2 ...

Usage (Win32):
tagger.exe map1.ut2 map2.ut2 ...

This will tag the maps you specify.

Several places are now taking orders for the non-SE DVD version (still two DVDs, and apparently still containing the tutorials on the second DVD), with a posted shipping date of 4/13.

well, new as in new to me, a reissue of the game on DVD format (sans changes, yes).

Thanks for the feedback that it does exist.

a bit off topic, but is anyone able to confirm there is going to be a release on DVD (NOT the special edition, which I was unable to obtain, but a regular release on DVD)?

Because Gamespot is in bed with Microsoft. Nothing more, nothing less. And the only bit that's OS dependant is the crappy ass installer.

Anyone running UT2k4 on non-XP Windows, or Linux, or OS X can download from worthplaying and unzip it to get the exact same content (the WP file appears to be a zip, not an exe, so even though they say "all Windows" it's really "all platforms").

The point, however, remains -- it is a slimy thing to do, and there's going to be some people who will think they can't get it at all because they don't run XP.

According to the Steam hardware survey, about 6 percent of people are using something other than XP. Support for Windows 98 was stopped ages ago, so the next logical step would be to buy XP and download Linux for free (it is a free OS still?). I'm pretty sure there is no real reason to install Linux, other than to stick it to the man.

No - most savvy gamers prefer not to install a bloated piece of turd on their computers. I am sticking with Win2K - at least I don't have to deal with product activation or the endless adds to sign on to Passport and Hotmail every time I turn on my computer.

If you dont want to install a bloated turd on your computer then you shouldn't have bought a PC, you should have bought a Mac. Windows XP is actually good. I've never had any endless signin ads for Passport, so maybe that was a pre-SP1 annoyance as my copy was SP1. As for the product activation thing, I've only had to do it once which was when I first installed XP.

Anyway this thread is about an unoffical bonus mappack that only works on Windows XP. It's got nothing to do with Atari whatsoever, but the maps are made by people who were contracted to work maps for UT2K4.

About these maps, they need lots of memory, so just because you can run the official UT2K4 maps well does not mean these maps will run fine. So really there isn't any point in complaining about the XP exclusivity, because if you have a computer powerful enough to run UT2k3 the chances are you have a new PC that came with XP. If you are like me and you built a new PC from scratch, then maybe you stuck with an older Windows or perhaps you chose to install Linux which would severly limit what software you can run anyway.

Re: No.2

Are you saying you are not running Windows XP yet? It's really good you should try it.

If you want to run another OS like Linux that is possible on Dual booting, and if you are running an older Windows OS you can Triple boot

When it says on the page that these maps are "Epic designed", does it mean what it says?

These maps were designed by contractors working with Epic. The final approval and tweak process was done within Epic for these maps, though the initial design was done by the contractors with feedback from our designers.

"After unzipping, the maps are 20MB and 17MB, which makes them the two largest ONS maps (if anyone really cares).

Edit: And by largest I mean in terms of MB, just to clarify."

Although the maps are larger than the small ONS maps that shipped with UT2k4 such as Primeval and Frostbite, a portion of the filesize of these maps is due to content such as textures being included in the .unr (map) file itself. The Unreal engine supports storing data such as static meshes and textures within the level itself, thus helping to reduce the number of dependent files that need to be installed (and thus possibly over-written with earlier/later/incorrect versions or just straight-out lost).

No its a lie, a bunch of monkeys typing randomly just happend to come out with the raw data that was then converted using algorithms and pattern matching programs. Duh?

Based on comments in this thread, I am now curious:
When it says on the page that these maps are "Epic designed", does it mean what it says?
(The full quote is in a post of mine earlier in this thread.)

You actually don't need IE, but FireFox was blocking the popup so that was annoying.

The new maps are pretty nifty, one is a little/medium one, the other is huge and has a levi with lots of jump pads for when noobs wont give rides.

I'd rate them worth playing, if anyone cares.

After all the hard work Epic put into making UT2004 run on Linux and Mac?! What a slap in the face to the poor Epic developers!

It's a LOT of extra work getting a game to run on multiple platforms, and I'm sure the payoff doesn't even come close to the extra development cost. It's disgusting that someone would try to undermine Epic's great platform independent work by releasing "XP only" maps. UT is NOT an XP-only game.

You also have to use IE to get the download to work, btw.
