A Far Cry from German Approval

The Far Cry Website (thanks Frans) has word that the non-localized version of Far Cry has been pulled from German shelves, to be replaced by the version that adheres to stricter German regulations about game content:
In accordance with German law, www.farcry.de and its forums have been pulled down following Far Cry's ban (US/UK version) in Germany. They will remain shut until the German version of Far Cry is released, which has the official youth rating by the German USK.

We apologize to our German community for any inconvenience this may cause and hope things will resume their normal course shortly.

Robots running around screaming "aaaaahhhhh my oil is leaking" and then spilling green blood (oil?) at you? Bullets that never hit their target? Or weapons with a "bang" flag coming out of them?

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

...and they're a bunch of conservative bastards.

I was just thinking. Why develop games for Germany at all? The Farcry team should just move to America so they don't have any problems contributing to the $10 billion a year industry.

This is so embarrassing. I was proud that a AAA shooter like Farcry was being developed in my country but now those fucking regulations screwed it again... They actually had to take out the ragdoll-physics for the enemy models to pass those stupid regulations.

I have to say that I've enjoyed Far Cry a great deal, but I've not seen ANYTHING in this game so far that even comes close to being offensive. (ok, so one dude used the f-word . . .) \

Flo, do you happen to know the code / standards that FC is violating? What is the essense of the German USK in terms of restricted content?

Dont worry, I saw a rag doll patch released on the net recently so those of you that get screwed over in germany will still be able to get that effect. I guess Doom 3 wont be releasing the American version there. they are also using rag doll effects. I personaly cant see how this is offensive in anyway to anyone that plays this game as stated, I really havent heard an reall offensive language in this game except for "your ass is mine"

oh well,

Offensive content isn't what the Germans worry about, its violence. They are fully aware of their own people's ignorant ability to be riled up into a force of raging facist warmongers, so they closely monitor all ingoing media to limit the effects of Nazism cropping up in the current generation.

It gets so ridiculous it hurts. I was testing Star Trek : Hidden Evil at Activision back in 99', and I was instructed by my suprvisor to play through the German build around 5 times through, looking for any possible swastikas, or anything that might look like a swastika in anyway.

The German government is well aware of its horrible past, so they take extreme and ridiculous steps to make sure They arn't responsible for another World War.

I read recently that Germany is experience a general malaise, that everyone there is feeling a bit glum. Can't help but think that these two subjects would be linked.

What gets pulled from the German version is :

1) Bulletwounds. They're pretty ghastly. It's no Soldier of Fortune 2, but they still look pretty... disturbing.

2) Blood. Drop a guy in the water and shoot him a few times. Definitely a no no in Germany.

3) The reason ragdoll physics is going to be removed is so that you can't shoot a corpse and make it flail about and such. Sick bastard that I am, I kinda like doing this every now and then, especially when the corpses are on stairs, or near a cliff or something, but you gotta admit that it's pretty violent.

We could debate endlessly over whether it serves any purpose, but this legislation has been in place in Germany for almost ten years now (I think), so it's not as if Crytek & publisher didn't KNOW they were going to get nailed over this.
Pretty stupid decision by their publisher if you ask me.

IMHO it is rediculous that forever thruout history the German people have to continue to pay for the sins of their fathers. Funny thing is, just about every country in the world at some time in history is just as guilty of the same and more.

I hope some day this yoke is thrown off. It is freaking rediculous.

Far Cry (old german version) was pulled from german shelves because it was way to easy to re-active the removed gore-effects. Blood, bullet holes, dead enemys falling down stairs etc. everything is still there but dead enemys show no reaction to bullet hits an they don't bleed while floating in water.

Also Far Cry (old german version and all non-localized versions) ARE NOT banned in germany. As long as you are over 18 years old you can still buy them. But its not allowed to advertise the games or to put them on public display.

The "new" german version of FC (without the possibility to re-enable the gore-effects) is available to everybody over the age of 18 and advertisements for the game etc. are allowed.

Yakuza: Yes, absolutely. Actually we plan on taking over the world with the help of Far Cry. Thats one evil plan, isn't it?

Also, you should note that its forbidden to show swastikas because of a few thousand dumb neo-nazis in germany. If it was allowed they would run around proudly displaying their "signs". Because in other countrys it may be allowed to show a swastika-flag but here in germany we don't like swastikas nor nazis.

See, it is just as hypocritical as the US where violence in movies and games isn't such a big issue, but the whole country gets all nuts over one single exposed tit by janet jackson.
The Hypocrits are ruling the nations almost everywhere, no matter where you live.

The warez scene there isn't any bigger than elsewhere.
people there simply buy imported US of UK versions. Not only for the gore though. Usually dialogues and such are simply horribly translated.
For example, NOLF2 in english really had some good humor, in the german version it was just cheesy.

I would imagine a lot of it stems from an attempt to avert further hassles with certain organizations which have been forever raping the largely innocent German populace and various German institutions under the (all too often false) pretense of "reparations" since the early 1950's.

Hey Caveman: didn't the Deutsch version of Wolfenstein 3D (in addition to deleting whatever "plot" existed and every swatika) replace all the soldiers with giant rabbits?

Wolfenstein 3D was not changed in any way and was banned (because of the swastikas, not because you get to shoot Hitler at the very end of the game). Return to castle Wolfenstein had all swastikas removed.

LOL! You Americans crack me up! Sure the Germans may be strict when it comes to violence, but America is positively prudish when it comes to sex in the media. That probably explains why you guys are the most violent screwed up society in the world. George W. Bush is probably not getting enough so he has to shoot off his big guns!

Talisorn,

Both Germany and America are products of their respective histories. In America, like most places, what you see in the media is not an accurate representation of the average person's daily existence. We may not be able to watch titties on our commercials (shame really), but I'd take that over the kind of censorship that happens elsewhere any day.
