New Settlers Game

Ubisoft and its German studio Blue Byte announce plans to continue the Settlers series (thanks Frans) with an as-yet unnamed fifth installment:
UBISOFT AND ITS BLUE BYTE STUDIO UNVEIL THE NEW SETTLERS®
Sensational graphics, enhanced strategy gameplay -Ubisoft settles for nothing less in the next installment of The Settlers series

London, UK, 29th March 2004 - Ubisoft, one of the world's largest videogame publishers, today announced its development plan for the latest installment in the award-winning series The Settlers®. Developed by its German studio, Blue Byte, the new episode of the popular strategic simulation game will be released at the end of this year. The first four parts of the famous series have already sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.

The latest Settlers game takes the franchise and pushes it to the next level. Fans will enjoy fully animated 3D technology and enhanced gameplay features, but still be able to relive the experience that makes the Settlers series such a big hit. The game will take the player to a medieval setting, to re-conquer the kingdom currently under the domination of an evil tyrant.

"We wanted to offer an original gaming experience with the new Settlers game," said Benedikt Grindel producer of the Ubisoft-studio Blue Byte "After the release of Settlers IV, we looked at other directions for the Settlers franchise. After listening to feedback from Settlers fans, we believe we succeeded in renewing the franchise by adding many new gameplay and design elements while keeping the essence of Settlers."

The use of full 3D technology has given more scope for animation in the world of Settlers and allowed for developments in strategy-gameplay. Among other very experienced designers, Bruce Milligan, contributed to the new game. The American worked with the world-famous designers Sid Meier, Bruce Shelley, and Brian Reynolds and has lent his creative style to successful strategy titles in the past.

Odile Limpach, Managing Director of Ubisoft in Germany and the Ubisoft studio Blue Byte commented, "This highly awaited game from the cult series will excite existing fans and newcomers alike. The creativity and quality that Blue Byte has put into the game is second-to-none - a commitment central to all Ubisoft Development studios."

I've played 1, 2 and 3 and I thought number 2 was the best at the time of playing it. I couldn't get into 3 as well. Settlers 2 was evolutionary when it came out, impressive graphics, 2 player using two mouses, lol, I loved playing that. When 3 came out I played the first 3 or 4 missions and got fed up.

the best part of the old settlers game was rising from the stone age and taking over the world. Your opponents started from the stone age as well, and had to expand as you did.

Starting from medieval and trying to "re-conquer the kingdom currently under the domination of an evil tyrant" sounds like they've made it into a clone of something i've seen a million times, in about every rts game out there.

Personally, I wish Blue Byte would do another Incubation. I loved that game and the add-on. I guess it didn't sell well

Well, I have to say it's pretty fun. Though it's a bit sad that by the time I had everything running smoothly with enough resources everywhere, I had won the mission.
Don't know about the later missions, the combat in this first mission was boring. But that was to be expected.

I liked III, and the iron and smelting and whatnot.

I may have to try IV some day.

I enjoyed a couple of these... the resource stuff is pretty cool once you get the hang of it

I just wish combat wasn't so... weird... and annoying... especially since (at least in the 3rd, which is what I mostly played) every mission basically required you to take over the area

Never played any of them - if memory serves, wasn't it a spin-off of the Civ series? or am I thinking of something else?

There's a man out there I haven't seen in 15 years who's trying to kill me.

Same here, I've had lots of fun with it. And the music is addictive.

These screenshots make me want to install Settlers III again, though I will probably be hit by how boring the game is within 15 minutes. Max.
