Out of the Blue

So yesterday it was the scary car pictures, so today it'll be the cool car picture: Here is a link to a beautiful rendering of the #63 Blue's News Monte Carlo being run by Rigs of Rigs-Perkins Motorsports in his rookie season in the BGN of the MNRL (NASCAR Racing 2003). In his rookie season Rigs' team is currently 11th of 25 in the points race after five races with 11 races remaining on their schedule, so here's wishing them the best of luck with the remainder of the season. Vroom!

Stories of the Day: Engulfed by lingo.
Follow-ups: Pollution and the Slippery Meaning of ’Clean’ (registration required).
NASA successfully tests hypersonic jet.

Thanks Mike Martinez.

Amazing how they've always talked about it as being a simple technology, with no moving parts, etc- yet it takes 4 decades to put one in the air.

It's always been a materials problem. Scramjets need to get up to a certain speed and compress the incoming airstream to a certain pressure to work. The scramjet engine has to be made of a material strong enough to withstand the scramjet airstream coming in and the fuel/air stream combustion on the way out, but light enough for it to be a practical aircraft construction material. The ideal material is probably some kind of combination of metal composites and ceramics, the use of which are relatively new developments in the aircraft materials field...

The biggest problem with scramjets (aside from the materials problem) is that they need some other means to get up to the optimal minimum speed for scramjet operation - the scramjet engine itself is not designed for low-speed operation.
