Carmack at GDC Follow-up

To follow-up on the discrepancy between the two accounts of John Carmack's address at the GDC yesterday, a reader named Rene Patnode who attended the talk offers his perspective saying the HomeLAN Fed account is the more accurate of the two: "I can tell you that HomeLan Fed is a LOT closer to the truth. He mentioned Quake II as a former possible idea, but it was only that. What he did say was that the likely next id game will be a slight variation of Doom 3.... I personally would expect a mission pack or something on the order of Team Arena. Pretty close is also better than really close." Likewise, GameSpy's Carmack Address Recap likewise confirms that it was Computer and Video Games that came away with the wrong take on the facts here:
One interesting idea that Carmack said was discussed early on in DOOM 3's development was a product specifically meant to be a rendering showcase. In this case, the idea was to do a "Quake 2 remix" - to rebuild the game using all-new assets and technology. "But even the idea of just reskinning an old game brings with it the problems that as we have newer graphics technology, media creation demands get worse and worse..."

And some of you wonder why Carmack and ID are so silent these days. The guy can't say a damn thing without it getting twisted into a contoversy of some sort.

So, is id bashing the trend of the week then? This is why alpha leaks are horrible for companies, idiots like the folks here think it's going to be absolute final, and will spread the lies at all costs.

Personally, I'd prefer to have monsters placed where they do the most for gameplay and not where they look the best.

Why are you assuming that they don't place things where they do the most for gameplay? And why are you assuming that there is a conflict between good looks and gameplay?

Illogical, illogical.

AFAIK, it should be pronounced as like 'eyelid.'

Um...apparently you missed the PR awhile back where John himself stated that Doom 3 would run, albeit slow, on a 1 Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, and a Radeon 7000 series or GF2. With your setup, you should see 1280x1024, 32-bit, and 4x AA, with 30 fps or more.

I've enjoyed every id game (though Ill give TA a miss) but one unashamedly n00b question for those that know: is id pronounced "eye-dee" or like the "id" in "eyelid"??

I agree that id makes the best engines in the industry. I love how fast id engine games load *SNAP*. GTInteractive/Epic are much more "cpu heavy". look at the level of detail that you can get out of the Q3 engine, moreover, at that framerate. I do however have a couple of short quibbles about the q3 engine vs the q2 engine. 1) Being a map maker I have noticed that Q3 lights actually suck. No flickering lights, make a dark room in radiant, fire a rocket....notice anything odd? NO PROJECTED LIGHT! not until you put in another light source to "feed" it. Q2? lol real dynamic lighting...rocket produces its own light. this little optimization helps make q3 run so fast. limits what you can do with it though. the personal animations in quake2 were cool too, i.e. flipping the bird, taunting witht the ass slap or the crotch grab etc... exellent stuff. as for my personal opinion of UT, I found it sluggish compared to q3, in load times and in game play. tourney play in UT I thought involved to much dancing, while one-on-one'ing with someone in a good rail fight can make me sweat adrenaline! UT2k3 is a much better game than the first one, but the weapons are much more resonsive and the lightning gun is just a rail with new graphix. I am very angry that there is no co-op in doom3. That breaks the chain.

Kreilo, you missed the whole point of "technological innovation aside"

Maybe I should have said... It's been about about a decade since id produced a product that wasn't preceeded or suffixed with a number.

All sequels and prequels aside, we have Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake. Nazi's, Demon's and Alien's respectively.

There's nothing wrong with deathmatch, but I just prefer original concepts and hero's like in American McGee's Alice, or Deus Ex (the first one), the Thief games, Max Payne, etc.

I f$%*ing hated Team Arena...

I bought it and I'm not even sure I played every map. There were so many other mods for Q3 that the "team" arena drivel never had a chance.

Its been a long time since their last release - Q3:TA in 2000, which was in my opinion a game that did everything it set out to do.

Q3:Team Arena

hmmm... i don't see anywhere in that quote that they claimed it was an original idea. it simply states there was an uproar due to quake (a game traditionally single player, co-op, with multiplayer as an afterthought) being strictly deathmatch multiplayer.

don't read too much into it guys.

Ahh, thanks for the corrections. My Tribes friend would bring this to fisticuffs if he new the gross inaccuracies I was throwing out.

On the other hand, in that sense, at least Quake3 was a marginal creative deviation if only within id. Quake2, Quake1, Doom2, and Doom1 all have precisely the same gameplay. That list includes Wolfenstein and perhaps even Commander Keen if considering just single player.

Flashback: id announced that their next game, Quake3, would be deathmatch/multiplayer only, causing an industry-wide and community-wide uproar.

Flashback: Dynamix released Starsiege Tribes in 1998, beating Quake 3 to market by an entire year. id's original idea wasn't so original anymore.

Nice one guys, I was just about to explain to people why Tribes is due more props. It was clearly ahead of its time and only now are people getting it now that more mainstream studios are doing very Tribes-ish things. I'm not saying its the best game ever made (though it is damn fun), just one of the most important.
