Carmack at GDC - DOOM 3 "Close"

Computer and Video Games and HomeLAN Fed (thanks Frans) each have stories up based on John Carmack's address at the Game Developer's Conference, though their accounts of the proceedings don't actually jibe with each other. CVG reports that the id Software co-owner and technical director is indicating that their next game will be a Quake II remix using new graphics in order to shorten the development cycle. The report on HomeLAN Fed, however, says that Carmack described the Quake II remix idea as one that was considered and then dropped before moving along to DOOM 3 development, and that his discussions of their next project did indeed center around a shortened development cycle ("a couple of years"), but that is due to not needing to update the graphics engine as much as from Quake III Arena to DOOM 3. The story on HomeLAN Fed also describes other topics that the address touched upon, including ever-bigger game budgets, the future of gaming, and that DOOM 3 is "pretty close" to release, while CVG's quote is again different, saying "really close."

Screw remaking Quake 2, isn't that what Quake 4 was supposed to be? Just make that damn RPG you handed off to the other developer but got canceled.

Running all over town looking for the last couple games really put me in the mood to pre-order this one. So, what did everybody learn from their UT'04 / BF:V pre-ordering experiences? The one thing I did learn from these boards was NOT to go through Future Shop.

Were there any that met or exceeded expectations and are there any more online stores to definitely avoid?

Did you guys read it? The idea was that they could make a new graphics engine and show it off without having to make a brand new game.

I personally think it'd be cool to see an old game with new graphics. The gameplay in Quake 2 was bland (not bad, just not great), but the monsters, maps and weapons were top notch. It'd be fun to walk through at any rate. Also, Quake 2 deathmatch was the best deathmatch of all time, IMHO.

RE: #3

I don't know. EBGames seems to take its own sweet time if you do ground shipping. It was a week and a half before I got FF: Crysal Chronicles.

But, luckily for you, you now have BF:Vietnam, which is just awsome. Of course, so was the original.

I learned that sometimes pre-ordering is actually useful, instead of locking you into retail price and possibly getting your game after everyone else who didn't pre-order has gotten theirs.

Quake2 on the Doom3 and above engine? I still get shivers looking at some of the enemies in Q2. That would be simply badass.

I never pre order. It just seems like you're trusting the mail carrier a little too much. There is no tracking (with USPS unless you pay extra) and you just have to wait.

With retail shops, give them a buzz. "Hey, you guy got in Far Cry yet? TOmorrow? OK thanks."

(the next day)
"You guys have it in yet? Ok, great, be right there"

instead of just waiting.. and waiting..

well, Quake 4 is a Quake2-2, so a "real" Quake2 remake is not necessary to do...
(funny theme, as I installed Q2 some days ago, after playing the demo once again... stupid missionpack said somethng that it needs Win95 and refused to install per setup...had to copy it over manually and make links for it )
and Nerve is still working on their secret "based-on-an-id-property" project, which could be the "Quest"...

oh, and "close" would mean early June, I guess... woohoo

PS: ...the leaked Quake4 concept artworks looked simply stunning...

Making a Quake 2 remix is a pretty crappy decision. There are quite a few souped up Quake 2 engines already out there, such Quake 2 evolved and Quake 2 Max. And how many times can you play quake 2 before it becomes boring?

Edit: Then again, a new quake 2 would probably be much more entertaining than that cheesy "Quest" rpg.

XP has a "compatability mode" that tricks proggies into theinking its win95. Next time you have this problem, right click on the installer exe, choose Properties and Compatibility tab and then choose win95. Worked like a charm for me.

Nope. Quake 4 is not a remake. It is a sequel to Quake 2. The Quake 2 remake would still make a good thing to add as an extra goody on the Quake 4 disc.

"pretty close"...... yaaaawn.... wake me up when there is real news. The more time that passes, the less I give a shit about this game.

damn, "compatability mode" for a "setup.exe"...so close and I didn't thought about it a sec ... thx, will try that next time!

oh, and #15 I didn't say that Q4 is a remake of Q2 - I said it's a QII-2 which meant "sequel to Q2" as like Final Fantasy X-2, because of the different non-related parts before (Q1) and in between (Q3)... (just to clear that up ;P)

#15 i agree. a q2 sequel should be the n1 priority, with a remake of q2 or even q1 being icing on the cake, nothing more.

I pre-ordered UT2004 Special Edition from EBGames.com. Free shipping via UPS ground, with a tracking number. Yeah, it took a whole amount of two extra days to arrive compared to folks buying from the store, but at least I was guaranteed a DVD SE version

The more and more you play Farcry the more you forget about Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.. FarCry is amazing, you get the same feeling you felt when you played Half-Life back in the day how awesome it is, but now with 10 times more fun The bar has been raised, I just wonder if DOOM 3 or even Half-Life 2 can perfect anymore? I'm in Love with Farcry- it feels like Doom and Half-Life mixed together in a great package.
