Carmack at GDC - DOOM 3 "Close"

Computer and Video Games and HomeLAN Fed (thanks Frans) each have stories up based on John Carmack's address at the Game Developer's Conference, though their accounts of the proceedings don't actually jibe with each other. CVG reports that the id Software co-owner and technical director is indicating that their next game will be a Quake II remix using new graphics in order to shorten the development cycle. The report on HomeLAN Fed, however, says that Carmack described the Quake II remix idea as one that was considered and then dropped before moving along to DOOM 3 development, and that his discussions of their next project did indeed center around a shortened development cycle ("a couple of years"), but that is due to not needing to update the graphics engine as much as from Quake III Arena to DOOM 3. The story on HomeLAN Fed also describes other topics that the address touched upon, including ever-bigger game budgets, the future of gaming, and that DOOM 3 is "pretty close" to release, while CVG's quote is again different, saying "really close."

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought it was Paul Steed who got fired over deciding to go with Doom 3 instead of Quest.

Actually I don't remember and I'm too lazy to look it up.

I read an article a while back where Carmack was talking about possibly concentrating on a 3D engine that was basically a full studio. You could create a game, or a 3D full length movie in it if you wanted to. He said that he wasn't far off from doing "Toy Story" type graphics in realtime 3D anyway. I thought this sounded pretty cool.

He comes up with new ideas all the time though, then he just ends up working on the next "quake" or something.. so who knows.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

Unless you're talking strictly about plot, uh...how are you defining "original"?

The same type of weaponry/items have been popping up since Doom/Quake. It's just been moulded in a new shape, your basic melee weapon, shotgun and rocketlauncher have allways been there along with six or seven intermediary weapons (double shotgun, machine/chain-, plasma-, lightning- gun).
Plus indeed the repetitve storylines.

yep, the camp that didn't want to do Doom 3 relented but they stipulated that Steed had to pack his bags.

I wonder what happened to him. He was supposed to start his own development studio after he finished working at Wild Tangent. Haven't heard about him since.

Quake2R and Id being an engine developer Mar 26, 2004, 03:24

I see the point of considering doing a remake of a game to cut down development time. As it is, the engine itself was or could have been probably done a year ago. John Carmack is probably itching to get his hand on the next generation of graphics, and with making detailed games these days taking ever more time, Id needs to reconsider it's priorities.

One idea is to stop making games altogether and just create game engines and sell those. This would be sad because they do have talented artists, and although their games have seldom been very original, they have been very fun and popular.
Another is to cut down on the quality, making a game just to show off the engine. This is a bad idea, because of the above, and this kind of strategy wouldn't last, because gamers wouldn't buy it (after the third reincarnation of Quake2), unless they would restrict to making budget titles.
The thing I'd consider is developing the engine independant from game development. They could start licencing it as soon as the engine is in such a state, not until the game is finished. Of course this would mean that Id would no longer be the first to use it's own engine, but if they play it right, and use collaborations like with RtcW and Quake4, that wouldn't really be a problem, cause the game will still have 'Id' tagged all over it.

Guys, you didn't read the whole thing (including the other link) in it's entirety. They're not going to remake Quake 2. That was an old idea before Doom. In the second link Carmack states that they won't be doing Q2 again.

I don't see why a lot of people are pissed about the rumor about remaking Q2. The single player game was entertaining and the multiplayer was near perfect, and without the lag that games today have. If they are going to remake a game, why not remake on that everybody loves and ressurect it?

From the Commander Keen readme. You are Quake a force to be reckoned with... or something along those lines.
