Out of the Blue

Happy Saint Patrick's day! That's going to be one sloppy parade in New York City, as there's a bunch of snow on the ground after yesterday's storm. I did manage to find copies of UT2004 and Battlefield Vietnam yesterday, but am a bit frustrated with the latter at this point. Turning off anti-aliasing on my 9800 Pro, as advised in the read me, fixed the graphical glitches I experienced at first, but now am suffering with the game crashing after about 15 minutes of play. I'm not sure, but it may be a sound issue, as there's crackling and hissing from the speakers after it crashes. I hope I can figure this out today, because until it's fixed, Charlie don't surf.

I had better luck setting this to game.soundbuffersize 1000.

AMD 1.4
SB Audigy
512mb 266 ddr
ATI 9600 256mb (CAT 4.2)

I run at 800x600x32@75 with all graphics options on and video settings on medium.

Also using EAX2 with 5.1 speaker setup.

Runs the game great most of the time. Still can't wait to build a new machine though.

This is a myth, NTFS gets as (or more) fragged as FAT drives

Ok, I was going to spout off some technical reasoning for my statements, particularly since your drive fell into my warning about "very full", but my research shows that you're right and I'm wrong. Feh.

And the bundled defragger in XP doesn't defrag the MFS, which is what needs defragging the most...

By contrast, most of the *nix FS's (JFS, XFS, ext2/3, etc) are fragmentation resistant. They'll still fragment, but generally not as badly. I don't really get why NTFS is as archaic in this regard as it is -- the methods to fight external fragmentation were known back when it was being designed.

That Assault level were you fly the spaceships? Took a good 30 seconds or more to load on my machine, and I've got a 3 gig proc with a gig of ram...

if you run NTFS there's no need to defrag
This is a myth, NTFS gets as (or more) fragged as FAT drives. I'm actually in the process of cleaning a bunch of stuff off my machine (2 gigs free out of 120) so I can defrag, because the drive map after analyzing it is almost completely red (eg: fragmented).

if you get shitty 2k4 preformance make sure that you have the option to preload all skins OFF

I'll have to try that... is there a way to force all skins to the same as yours, in order to avoid the hitching problem that will occur otherwise (as your computer goes off to load a skin you don't have)? I'm guessing that they reload all of the skins every map load, because it's taking an insane amount of time for my computer to load maps.

defrag your hard drive its 5.5gigs big so having it in 500000 places across your hd is going to fuck it up more than most games

Agreed... but, once again, if you run NTFS there's no need to defrag (at least under normal circumstances; if you run with a very full drive and load/delete stuff constantly you may run into fragmentation problem).

Sorry, couldn't see it posted here.. so I thought you might like to know..

Try adding "game.soundbuffersize 400" to your default.con file under Battlefield Vietnam\Mods\BfVietnam\settings

Many people with audigy's seem to be having this issue. It's helped a lot for me. However, I'm still forced to use the Miles 2d option. EAX seems to have some "issues"

On that note, now that i've kicked the game around and my computer has realized that I was going to throw it away if it didnt play the game better i'm getting pretty decent preformance.

Its good enough to let me play instagib with no problems, so i guess I can't complain.

Replying to my own post... but I can now verify first-hand that playing with a cracked exe allows you to play UT2k4 online, I just finished a session of ONS.

Cool, I hate keeping the CD/DVD in. Remember: backup the original files, or the next official patch might not work!!

I need to scratch together enough money to pick up UT04 right away

I'm glad I picked up UT2k4 -- fun as hell and the integrated voice chat rocks. I've used VoIP before, but not for years, and never with a FPS. On public servers it can make a huge difference in team work(although I'm sure the griefers will ruin it too).

Like most of the ONS maps (played all of them, haven't touched the other game types in release yet), particularly the one with 6 nodes giving you two paths to the base -- gets interesting when both teams have a vulnerable power core.

Actually its because when you change one it sets the others to no reticle. You can just keep the "use custom xhair" box unchecked as well, so all the weapons use the same crosshair. I simply hate all of them other than a nice red dot, so it works out fine. But at least you can customize each weapons aiming reticle, thats pretty neat.

My only game related complaint is probably the small amount of player avatars. For some reason I expected a ton of them and there's only about 30 or so. Oh well i'll live.

Posted this in the UT shipping thread, but since UT is mentioned here:

Saw this on the board at the official UT site:

If, after messing with the targeting reticules in the option screen (where you can change the reticule for each weapon), you notice that some of your weapons now have no targeting reticule AT ALL, delete the user.ini file in the system directory...

Worked for me...

Obviously, after doing this, you'll need to pick your avatar and re-enter your name again...

I've got some Gateway branded yum-chow machine. Its a P4 and the mobo is so weak it won't run ram at 400mhz. Needless to say I got fucked, oh well at least I got to play all those amazing games that came out in the last 2 years...

Next time i'm building the damn thing my self, but like I said, that has to wait for 1) money and 2) the new mobo's to be released. In the mean time i'll have fun playing UT2004: The Epic Slideshow. (now if only Epic had released the game then i'd be witty.)

I just got home with UT2004 & BFV. I never played BF'42 so this will a whole new deal for me.

I'm really interested about how the other OS maps for UT2004 will play out. I've only played one so far, the first "snowy" map, and I noticed that by including a tank in the base it made getting and holding that final node difficult. I'm hoping that every map will have it's own best strategy. IMHO, with the Torlan map, the team with one or two guys who knew how to get and use the tanks would probably win.

Well I am running a 9700 Pro but I was having a few issues with the 4.3's. I read someone posted on the BF:V forum to try the 3.7's and it cleared up all my problems and I can use AA/AF at will again.

that images of the day link:
a few things

one of the shots is of him sitting in the bath

and there are three more consecutive shots after that putting him in the bath for over 2 hours.

multiple days hes wearing the same stuff,

im guessing hes on holiday as the guy never stops moving apart fromt he one bit where he is in the fish market for a full 14 HOURS!

So, what can we deduct from this children?

Well we have a person who loves hanging around in a fish market, apparently on his own, for extended periods of time. he likes to wear the same clothes a lot, meaning that he will reek of fish.
He likes to spend massive amounts of time in the bath BEFORE he goes to the fish market, and hes pretty damn moody as the only 2 times he smiles is when hes drinking alchol with some random japenese people and even then thats not a smile.
