City of Heroes Beta Status

The City of Heroes Website (thanks Frans) offers a status report on beta testing of Cryptic Studios' upcoming superhero MMORPG and word on when those who have pre-ordered the game can expect admission into the testing, saying: "Pre-order customers will be let in to the Beta in controlled groups (by the thousands) beginning March 22nd! All Pre-order customers are GUARANTEED entry to the Beta by April 7th. Your best chance to get into the Beta is by reserving your copy of City of Heroes now!"

I want to play as an evil character. I want mindless drones that will do my bidding on my every whim. I want to plan complex schemes involving desperate gambits and create unescapable deathtraps and unstoppable juggernauts. I want the world to tremble at the sound of my voice.

And after that I will break for lunch.

I think you would be a good primary school teacher

You just described almost every PvE online RPG out there. That said, I think I'll wait for the villians expansion that has been alluded to (profits permitting) before checking this out.

I recently spent several hours carefully reading every piece of info on the CoH site and still wonder - where's the Game? Gameplay seems to consist entirely of:

- get a mission,
- beat up the mission's bad guys,
- get a reward you can use to boost your stats.

OK... and then what?

Even though there is extensive material describing the background of various good/evil organizations and characters, NO mention is made of interacting with them in any way other than getting increasingly difficult missions to beat up their members in increasingly complex ways in increasingly dangerous 'zones' of the city.

Best I can figure out CoH isn't a mmorpg, it's a mm superpower martial arts Action/Fighing game. *BIF!* *POW!* *SOCKO!* Oh Yeah that'll hold my attention for about 30 minutes on Saturday morning.

Ahh, I see, so you have to go to a physical store like EB and put money down... I wonder if thats refundable or if it's actually paying for the beta disc. Hmm, to much work already, heh.

I wish this game success, but it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

I've heard, presuming you enjoy a PvE only experience, that this game is quite fun. Be interesting to see how it does, given it's theme, and total focus on PvE.

read this:

2) I want to get into the beta-what can I do to increase my chances of being invited?
The only way to GUARANTEE entry into the Beta is to reserve a copy of the game and receive a free Pre-order bonus disc (this typically requires $10 down payment, but is subject to variation based on the specific retailer)

dont know how this works with something like EB

If you preorder at an online retailer you don't need to put any money down. And there's no penalty for cancelling your order if you so desire. Which is why this ploy doesn't seem to be so great for high-profile titles that already have legions of fans lined up.

As much as I want it to succeed, I have a bad feeling this game will suck

I have never pre-ordered a game before so I have a question about it... Can you cancel a pre-order w/o penalty? So, for example, I could pre-order CoH, play the Beta then cancel the pre-order w/o a restock charge etc? Just wondering. Interesting Marketing ploy to get people to pre-order.
