UT2004 Dedicated Server

Epic Games sends news that the dedicated server for Unreal Tournament 2004 is now available, just in time for the retail release of the multiplayer shooter sequel. Mirrors can be found on the Unreal Tournament Website. Here's the deal:
These files allow anyone to run a dedicated UT2004 server, even if they do not own a retail copy of UT2004. Once installed, it will occupy around 2.0 GB of disk space, significantly smaller than the 5.5GB required for a retail installation. Server admins wanting to advertise their server to the official master server list, and be included in UT2004 stats will require a dedicated server key. Go to http://unreal.epicgames.com/ut2004server/cdkey.php to generate a dedicated server key.

Either everyone else is easily turned, or I'm significantly more jaded than I thought I was. I don't know how, though, I thought Freedom Fighters was an outstandingly fun game. How can anyone that loved FF be more jaded than the next guy?

you have left out the third possibility that you just have "different" taste.

By different here, I basically mean bad, but you be the judge.

when is someone going to remake DM Morpheus

.... for UT 2004 ?

I'm sure you know this, but the UT2k3 maps will work just fine with UT2k4...

I'm gonna have to vote "jaded", dude...I wasn't expecting much out of this AT ALL until I played Onslaught...and with that, I plunked down the preorder.

It's still not the original UT (when is someone going to remake DM Morpheus?), but it's damn better than 2003...

[decent-sized] MP3 collection

Decent sized? I'd think that to be on the small side... I have 60G or so of MP3's, ripped at alt-preset extreme from my CDs.

I have absolutely no issues with the size of the install... there's plenty of games that eat that much or more, particularly if you start talking about downloadable content.

As for the game itself -- Beemer, if you don't like it then don't play it. A lot of us do like it. Why must people who don't like something come in and whine? Shoo. Go play something you do enjoy and leave others to their preferences. What a dull world this would be if everyone liked the same damn things.

It makes me really sad to be the only one that thinks this is even more of a steaming pile than 2K3 was.

5 and a half gigs insall? Are they NUTS? Anyone know of any other game that requires that much or more?

Who cares, when you can get a 200GB drive for $80 now? It's about time games started pushing beyond the typical 1-2GB of disk usage. 5.5GB is easily surpassed by a small movie, anime, or [decent-sized] MP3 collection.

Game installation sizes haven't kept up with disk sizes if you look back a bit. Wing Commander 2 w/ Speech Pack and Special Operations 1 and 2 was 26MB. Back then you were doing good with a 40MB hard drive! Or maybe a little later on, 150MB, which was really nice. Let's say you had a 150MB drive. So WC2 would take 26/150 = 17.3% of the drive. Now let's say you have a dinky little 40GB drive on your gaming PC of today. 17.3% of that is 7GB! 17.3% of a 200GB drive is 34GB!!

Games are supposed to push the envelope. As long as the space isn't wasted on stupid stuff, and there aren't 50,000 little files, they're on the right track IMO.

You need all that space becuse of the ~100 maps that will be included. That's not even counting mods and third-party maps. I see there are already two quality Onslaught maps in the works:

http://www.nathillien.com/

Time to upgrade my HDD. Oh wait! I got two 80 gig Serial ATA drives in a RAID-0 set up with 110 gigs to spare

IIRC, they give you a key as well as a windows registry file, which you can use in lieu of entering in the key. This registry file is of course useless to those who run Linux.

I haven't signed up for this yet, but why exactly would they need to send you a Windows .reg file just to send you a CD key? Has anyone checked this out yet?
