On Max Payne 3

Another revelation can be learned from the Bear Stearns Media 2004 Conference, where Take-Two Interactive CEO Jeff Lapin (thanks Shackforums and Ant) reveals that in spite of lower than projected sales of Max Payne 2, there will be a Max Payne 3: "I think we'll take a few years to make the next one that much more spectacular, is what we have to do, but its clearly a brand that everybody knows, and there will be another Max Payne." Jeff makes some other interesting points about the industry during his talk, including his assessment that the margins on value-priced games are as good as those of full-priced products.

Max Payne... Mar 12, 2004, 03:55
Mar 12, 2004, 03:55

...is one of the most tedious games that I have ever played.

Having said that, I absolutely love Max Payne 2. For whatever reason, I finally "got" the series and I had a total, absolute blast. For the few hours I played it, I was one ass-kicking, slow moving, death-dealing noir detective.

I cannot deny the faults, but I really enjoyed the second one and cannot wait for 'ol Max to continue his journey throughout the night in Max Payne 3.

Excited for UT2K4, but dying to play FC,
Ray

They should have just put the Max Payne 1 Kung Fu Mod into production and called it Max Payne 2. It would have been more fun

I didn't think the Kung Fu mod for Max Payne was that good. And I did think Max Payne 2 was short, but nevertheless enjoyable

It has style

And I found the graphics to be more than pleasing (because of the great textures and lighting probably, because it didn't have much pixel shading, if at all)

Ah well.. each to his own, I guess

AND NO MORE DAMN DREAM SEQUENCES!!!!

The dream sequences in the first game were a pain in the ass, but I really liked the MP2 dream sequences, they struck me as an eerily effective narrative technique.

I'll happily pay 25 dollars for six hours of quality gaming. Not 50.

For 50 bucks, I expect to be playing your games solidly for AT LEAST three days. The original Max Payne gave me that. With MP2, I knew I was in trouble when chapter three began and I was barely four hours into the whole thing (although that's not counting reloads and me replaying cool gunfights).

I'll reiterate, I DID enjoy it. There's just NOT enough of it, by any justification.

Quality, not quantity, is what should count in a game. Max Payne 2 was shooting for just that. A quality 6 hours of gameplay.

Normally, I'd agree with that statement 100%. But even at $30, I expect more than 6 hours of play...

Maybe, with less sales of MP2, the devs will be given the time they need to take it to the next level...

I really hope this means that MP3 will come in at a much lower price point if it only has a 7 to 10 hour single player experience. I got 3x as much gameplay out of Serious Sam and it cost less than half the price of Max Payne 2.

Or they need to make the game longer to match the price point.

I quite liked the MP2 demo and played it through several times, but never felt compelled to buy the full game for some reason.

It's strange actually, in recent times I think I've had much more fun playing demos then the full games. For example with Jedi Academy I think I probably spent more time messing around in the demo than completing the full version.

it took me 10 hours to beat max payne 2 and i really enjoyed it. but then i watched all the tv shows, looked around to find quite a few cool easter eggs, and appecated the quality of everything that went into it instead of just running though it guns blazeing.

I was thinking about max payne multiplayer and thought of a (i think) good way of doing it with bullet time included:

BAsically more u kill more bullet time u get (ala MP2), any player can enter bullet time if they want, but if player one does then player 2 moves slowly unless the activate bullet time too in which case they speed up to 'normal' bullet time speed. that way u wouldent be forced to use it, but if someone was using it to get an edge over u u could use it back and balance it out, unless u didnt have any spare.

hope that makes sense, im a little drunk..

I'm glad the sales were below projections. Six hours of gameplay for $50 is crap.

Agreed. Hopefully they'll fix that in the next one...

Quality, not quantity, is what should count in a game. Max Payne 2 was shooting for just that. A quality 6 hours of gameplay. Where it fell short was in rushing to complete it by the end of 2003 in order to get a certain $10 million dollar bonus.

But wait, "Max Payne 2 didn't come out with any big bugs, how could it be rushed?" They knew in advance that the guys at the top wanted it done before 2003 closed out so they scaled back on their initial ideas.

Whole new engine *scratch*, lets just improve the existing one.
Greatly expanded gameplay experience *scratch* We'll just make a few improvements and move on (Bullet Time 2.0 should have been called Bullet Time 1.09).

They fell short...and so did their projections.

MP1 was a really fun game.

I was considering MP2, but it was a case of MP2 being one of a selection of games, which KotOR won because people said it would last me ages, whereas MP2 was barely a weekend. Thats just not long enough for a game to be worth the money.

Anybody that didn't think MP 1 and 2 were the cheeziest games ever made would probably vote for Arnold Swarzenegger as best actor.

I was playing it halfway through and I thought to myself, "what the hell is going on in this game?" and I lost interest. H&D2 makes me a lot happier.

You take a few more years to make a few more levels. You know, so I don't complete the game between an ice cold can of coca cola and my very first belch...

I did enjoy Max 2, but it was over way too soon, and replaying that five hours of gameplay got old way too quickly. It's no longer fun if you know where every spawn and every enemy is going to be (and how can you stop yourself from figuring that out, really?), and it doesn't take all THAT long to figure that stuff out if the game's only half a sneeze long.

I think that's really what hurt their sales in the end.
