New ATI CATALYST Drivers

The ATI Drivers & Software Page now offers downloads of new version 4.3 CATALYST reference drivers. Among the listed changes and improvements in the release notes are "SURROUNDVIEW" multi-adapter, multi-monitor support for the integrated ATI RADEON 9100 IGP graphics processor and a new enhanced rotation mode. They also list performance improvements, specifically mentioning 3-7% frame rate improvements for Halo and Tomb Raider. Thanks Ant.

Anyone that has problems with it running smooth don't know how to tweak their system to get maximum performance.

What the hell are you talking about? Yeah, Halo runs pretty smooth in 800x600 with FSAA on my AMD 1700+. I'm just saying that (a) for how it looks, it >should< run better, because other than a lot of fancy effects, the levels are sparse and unimagiative and (b) when it came out, it ran like absolute crap on nVidia fx cards. Hence the 25% + 25% + 25% performance increases.

As for it "rocking", that I guess is a matter of opinion. Personally, I couldn't get through it because after playing level after level that looked the same with the same 4 or 5 enemy types, it got old.

Anyway, the whole point I had was that Halo runs worse than games that look better. Case in point, I can run DX:IW (another horrible game) in 1024x768 w/FSAA and it performs better than halo and looks a lot better. It's a known fact that Halo has poor performance. Get over it.

Listen Rig, you fucktard, I own 3 computers with 3 different video cards (9700pro, GF4 Ti 4600, and a GF3 Ti500), and tweak each computer especially for gaming. I have reinstalled Windows more times then I care to count, turned off every possible useless service, and o/c'd everything that can possibly be o/c'd to as far as it could be o/c'd so I get the best performance possible from each of my computers. Heck I was able to run Halo fine til I turned up AA and AF, but it still looked like crap. I played it for about 20 minutes and gave up on the crappy outdated graphics and poor unimaginative gameplay (reminded me of Unreal back in it's day, only not as good looking). Only downside to being a pcgamer is I have to put up with constant driver updates and constant patches, but it still beats playing console games by a long shot. Tweaking my PC is what I do when I get bored of playing, and lately I been bored alot, heck I been on here alot instead of gaming.

Rigs, nobody should ever have to do these things to get a game running. Why do you think PC gaming is losing from Console gaming?

You two fucktards don't have a clue, do you? Halo rocks. Anyone that has problems with it running smooth don't know how to tweak their system to get maximum performance. I bet you haven't defragged in your life, never reinstalled Windows since you got your machine and never go into the control panel to mess with the settings, eh?

Yeah, I'll agree with you there. It has tons of features like normal mapping and spec lighting and all that jazz, but the environments are uninspiring to say the least. Overhyped.

Then again, Halo runs like crap for everyone.

Halo was crap to begin with no matter how bad the framerates were.. bland textures and no co-op killed the game for me. Good thing I didn't have high hopes once I heard it was going to the Xbox first. Ports of console games, especially FPShooters, usually end up sucking anyways.

nVidia can claim up to a 25% increase in many games because a lot of major games (Deus Ex, Halo, etc) seem to have been broken with the original releases. I remember taking Halo over to try it on my friend's 5600ultra and it ran worse on his 2500+ in 640x480 than it ran in 800x600 on my Radeon 7500 on a 1gig system. From what I hear, it still runs like crap. Then again, Halo runs like crap for everyone.

Well, ya should have said so. I guess I see his point now. Well, when they mentioned an increase in performance, I at least saw it with my geforce card. With these new Cat drivers I don't see any increase (actually decreases in Ravenshield, my most played game.. and DOES not fix the AA issues with my Radeon 9700 pro).

Maybe didn't see 25% as nVidia stated, but at least there was some, unlike these new drivers.

Next card is definately going to be a nVidia again, at least I didn't have as many driver issues with them as this 9700pro.

And sorry for being such a moron myself, been upset since I installed these new drivers.

Yeah I'll agree that Nvidia really started to just get plain ludicrous with their claims. According to all those 25% increases, the initial drivers must have been the equivalent of underclocking your card to 0.02Mhz.

Then again, both of the two giants are guilty of just going for speed over quality all the time. All these benchmark improvements that are done SOLELY to look good on tomshardware et al are just plain stupid.

Similarly, I love how games can work with a certain version, then break with the next one. Then work again. Then break again. MAKE SURE OLD SHIT WORKS BEFORE TESTING NEW SHIT, THANK YOU.

I remember them offering 50% increases in performance. I still have some Nvidia drivers circa 24.76 around because I found every set of Nvidia drivers made my frames drop. Ati's drivers actually do increase my frames every update so kudos to their driver development team.

You are the moron here, open your eyes instead of your mouth for a change. NVidia, with almost every single driver release claims of an increase of 25%.
