Far Cry Research Demo

The full version of the updated "research" demo for Far Cry is now available, offering an all-in one package with the research level that was extracted from the updated demo and released for the previous demo (story). The new demo is a 551 MB download, available on FilePlanet (registration required) and GameSpot DLX (registration required); and there's a 519 MB version slimmed down thanks to the removal of the included Direct X 9 installer on 3D Gamers, mirrored on ActionTrip, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, Pixelrage.ro, and Worthplaying.

welp, it looks beautiful, but i was quite shocked to see my framerate and performace totally TANK when i entered the cave. I mean I walked in and it almost became a slide show. Outside it was as smooth as the prom queen's thigh, but inside the cave...it made my no-no parts hurt.

/shudder.

i had that exact problem ant, and i wont turn off visual options just to run it so i uninstalled.
Setting AA and AF to "Application Controled" is not turning them off; it is letting the game choose whether to enable them. If you go into the game's Video Options, you will see that you can then enable these settings ingame.

In short, quit your bitching.

Agreed. And the way things are looking (with recent games), you're going to see a lot more of this in the future. It's not that the game isn't compatible, it's that you can't turn on AA and AF from the desktop and THEN have the game try and turn them on AGAIN. It doesn't work that way...it's a "one or the other" type deal, and most new games seem to want to control this from inside the game itself, and not from the settings you specified from the desktop.

KOTOR is the same way...

No issues here, either.

I did, when I installed the first demo, have corrupted textures, but that was fixed handily with the latest Catalyst drivers (4.3).

That type of behavior usually means the last game you played didn't exit cleanly (i.e. didn't purge memory fully).

One other thing you can try is forcing VSYNC ON in the contol panel. That often fixes issues with depth sorting (especially on overclocked machines).

For the record, my card is a 128MB All-in-Wonder Radeon 9700Pro.

Yeah, it filled up the loading bar and then reset my computer. Without AA it would load but it would display awful glitches - polys jumping about etc - hard to describe but v. annoying. This was on R9800Pro with the latest-but-one Catalysts (new ones dont work for me). But if you want, you can still activate the research map by downloading it and extracting it properly, then bringing down the console and typing "\map research" (w.o. quotes) For me, the glitchy graphics were far worse on this level.

It was FSAA and Anisotropic. Both must be disabled (Application controlled) for Direct3D. Short demo and I still like the first one. There are still graphic problems in this demo as well.

Does anyone have problems with this Far Cry demo #2 crashing with blue screen at the end of loading screen? I didn't have this problem in the original demo. I am using the latest Catalyst driver (v4.2) for my ATI Radeon 9800 All-In-Wonder card (128 MB) in Windows XP Professional SP1 (all updates).

Also, is there a way to go to the second level since I already did the first one in the original demo?

Thank you in advance.

If you already have the original demo and also got the 39meg research level then ... you don't need this.
It's convenient, I guess, for just having 1 download instead of the two, but I'm guessing anyone that had the urge to play this already has it and wont need . .. . ok ok you get the point.

not only did it not work on my top of the line system, it crashed it everytime to the point where i couldnt alt+tab
ctrl+alt+del or alt+f4 out of it. fuck these guys need to do a bit of tweaking still, if the full game comes out like this they're screwed.

It's good, but gives me some wierd graphics glitches that have pretty much consigned it to the "maybe" bin. Heh last year's Uni connection, 6MBps max.... oh the curse of DSL now. Still, better than the 56K I get at home.
