Sam & Max Sequel Axed

LucasArts has posted the announcement of cancellation of Sam & Max Freelance Police, planned as a sequel to Sam & Max Hit the Road, their classic adventure game (thanks Quboid). Word is:
"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.

"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" = The Adventure market is dead and we don't want to do anything to help revive it.

This is really sad. Not because I'm a fan of the series, rather the industry needs new ideas and to help stimulate genres that are not doing as well. Other than Syberia II and The Longest Journey 2 (aka Dreamland), the Adventure genre really needs more attention.

I'm sure most "old school" gamers here grew up on those Sierra classics like the Space Quest series, Quest for Glory, and King's Quest. Even LucasArts played a part with the Monkey Island and Indiana Jones series.

I wish a developer with a good track record and who is relatively secure, would make more adventure games... even if it won't make a ton of money.

hmm if I owned stock in this company I'd be selling it right about now...

Isn't that basically saying, "the game sucks, no one will buy it."

*sigh*
i think it would have filled a void that there has been in pc games for quite a while, a decent adventure game...
as opposed to the linear plot line, no thought process, games on the shelves

Yeah, Sierra and LucasArts used to be the kings of the adventure genre... Really sad to see this game cancelled, as there are enough recent "serious" adventure games out there (Syberia II, The Longest Journey 2, Broken Sword 3). I was really looking forward to a comical adventure game

They even had the two original Sam & Max designers working on this one... Ahhhh!

I am not a big fan of adventure games, but I do remember the humor in the original game when watching a friend play it. Even the sequel trailer was funny. This stinks.

Translation: We just realised that this game has nothing to do with Star Wars. So it dies. But we'll have plenty of crapy titles based on Episode III!

Well I'm certainly not happy about this... But hey! At least we still have Magna Cum Laude or whatever in the works! I'd rather see Larry (or his nephew in this case) than ol' Maxy.

Agreed why even create these games to begin with. Who does the freaking research prior to development that say whether or not a game will make it or not. It really shows their incompetence.

LA manager: "Hey programmer guy that looks intresting, whatcha workin on?"

Programmer: "Well its this game called Sam and Max where you do crazy imaginative things, very different to the current stuff out there?"

LA: "Imaginative hmm.. and can we port it to a console?"

Prog: "Well not realy.."

LA: "GET BACK TO WORK ON DULL GENERIC CONSOLE STAR WARS CLONE GAME!"

You obviously have no clue how development works, and I don't feel like explaining it. Somebody else step up?
