Sam & Max Sequel Axed

LucasArts has posted the announcement of cancellation of Sam & Max Freelance Police, planned as a sequel to Sam & Max Hit the Road, their classic adventure game (thanks Quboid). Word is:
"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.

I used to play a lot of adventures in my pre-Doom gaming days... and my all time favorites are Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle.

With Indiana Jones 4 due out the summer of 2006, I wouldn't be surprised if LucasArts is planning another IJ adventure to coincide with the movie's release. Think about it... none of the S&M staff were axed, 2 years is just about right to create a polished adventure, and an IJ adventure would be a sure-fire hit, thus less of a gamble than S&M. I know... just wishfull thinking.

Adventure Gamers have some tips on what you can do...

The don't buy anything from LucasArts is slightly amusing, I mean, they gotta have stuff worth buying in the first place anyway... Well, what we feel are worthy.

If you have the time to post

Why not take the time to write to Lucasarts and tell them how far they have fallen.

Damm took a wrong turn here somewhere.

Yeah that game was cool, story wise at least. It was pretty painful to play, though.

If it's not a LucasArts adventure game is is not a "best" adventure game. Sorry chum.

The only game I have seen come close is Sanitarium.

Games like Runaway, Syberia, The Longest Journey and the upcoming Leisure Suit Larry game show that people will still buy a well done and fun adventure game.

Actually about a year ago I read an article in PC Gamer (I think) that had a list of the number of units particular games sold. The Longest Journey despite its' major critical acclaim...it had only sold about 15,000 copies in the first 8 to 12 months or so of its release. Im going from recollection, so the numbers may be off. But the point is even the "best" Adventure games have not been selling.

At least they should do some qualitiy SW games like they did with X Wing, Tie Fighter, Rebel Assault. but no, the dumb little SW fanboy will buy EVERYTHING with a star wars tag on it, so it doesnt matter. just release some dumb idiotic games, FOR CONSOLES, and you will get your big fat share of stinking money.
LucasArts, you dissapointed me deeply. Either return to the past state of qualtity or just DIE (and take the fanboys who buy everything with you, will ya).

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

[fictional developer conversation at Lucasarts]

Developer -
Well boss. We've reached a new milestone on our Sam and Max 2 project. Care to take a look?

Boss -
Sure load it up!

My god! this sucks balls! Wtf have you been doing these past few months!?

Dev-
Um, masturbating mostly...but back to the point! I believe its up to the standards of all the other titles we are putting out lately, don't you?

Boss -
Well...when you put it like that...CARRY ON!

Financial guy -
Just one FUCKING minute goobers. We already reached our quota on over-hyped nerd-milking games for this quarter. This puppy goes on the back-burner for a re-announcement and re-release of the same hype in '05-06

Boss -
Alright! So...I assume I can continue to masturbate inside my private office while pretending to be in a "meeting" ?

Dev-
Damn....I only get to do that inside a cubicle...

They forgot to add the words - that sucks bigtime - to the end of that paragraph.

You're right. It just isn't the right time to release a graphic adventure for the PC that sucks bigtime. Bide your time and wait until people are ready to get their hopes up again.

IMHO they are great tacticians.

Forget about commercial PC games. It's already a lost battle. Freeware and Shareware games from independent developpers are the ones that are making PC gaming live.

As an example, checkout the latest bridge building games from http://www.chroniclogic.com/ ...

http://www.puzzlepirates.com/ is cool as well...

What's hard to swallow is the fact that they're using the declining market as the excuse. For God's sake, that's why the market needs games like this. The reason they're giving is bullshit anyway. LA knows they have a winner here, just like Monkey Island.

I would've been cool with the cancellation if they had said something like "The game is not shaping up to our expectation." That's what they did with Full Throttle 2, and that's perfectly fine. Honestly, if you have a winner on your hand, what are you afraid of? Afraid that it'll sell badly?

I think they're cancelling it for the exact same reason as that of FT2. The game is bad enough in its current state that they don't have any confidence of it getting decent sales. YET they blame it on the market.

Add another FU to your list from another fan of yours, LA.

They'd rather rip off known francises with Star Wars games (ie, Star Wars Battlefront = BF1942, Star Wrs Commando = Metroid Prime)

Right, because those are out and you've played them.

Then it's official. Lucasarts is dead to me. They'd rather rip off known francises with Star Wars games (ie, Star Wars Battlefront = BF1942, Star Wrs Commando = Metroid Prime) than make things that PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WANTING FOR EIGHT YEARS! I guess this means the Monkey Island 5 rumour isn't going to come true either, eh?

The original Sam & Max was a phenomenal game. Funny as all hell. For some reason, I simply died laughing when I first saw the "Cone of Tragedy".
