Sam & Max Sequel Axed

LucasArts has posted the announcement of cancellation of Sam & Max Freelance Police, planned as a sequel to Sam & Max Hit the Road, their classic adventure game (thanks Quboid). Word is:
"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.

Sam and Max was a great game. I personally enjoyed it more than any of the Monkey Island titles.

Well I haven't heard anyone raise this in a bit so here goes - Is PC gaming coming to an end? As games get more and more expensive to produce and as publishers grow increasingly conservative, will we soon see the end for all practical purposes of PC gaming? It would certainly be in the best interest of developers and publishers both for there to be one piece of hardware that all games are played on - say the Playstation. It seems to me that the cancellation of Sam and Max is just another indication of the demise of my favorite hobby.

I'm sure that one day in the not-too-distant-future PC games will consist of nothing but ports of huge console hits, card games and a few niche titles produced by independent developers like Cheap Ass Games.

It's no longer in the best interest of the bigger companies to put out a game that requires thousands of dollars of additional testing on 500 hardware configurations. Or for that matter, dependant on the whims of a very fickle hard core community all complaining loudly on every bulletin board about the game's frame rate. Look at DX:IW. Console gamers love it, PC gamers hate it but what platform will sell the most?
