Sam & Max Sequel Axed

LucasArts has posted the announcement of cancellation of Sam & Max Freelance Police, planned as a sequel to Sam & Max Hit the Road, their classic adventure game (thanks Quboid). Word is:
"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.

The first three StarWars were good...
Then George stopped caring.

Bleh, this is hardly a Star Wars involved thread, but I'd like to say this. None of the movies were all that great. As fiction or literature, if they had started out that route, would have probably been legendary in print. Be as it is, George Lucas is a superior story teller.

Spielburg may not have a flawless record, but it's a helluva lot better than Lucas's.

Though I don't see what George Lucas has to do with this thread, his only real involvement with his development company seems to be in merely naming it after himself.

GEORGE LUCAS, WHAT ARE YOU GOOD FOR EXCEPT FOR CRAPPY SCI-FI AND OVERMERCHANDISING???????

Man, do you even realize you have your caps on? But one good side to the over merchanidising is that at least the external authors who write books in the Star Wars universe actually do something decent with it.

Forgot to mention that I think it's better to write a well written e-mail to pr@lucasarts.com than just signing a petition

George didnt need to make the prequels. He made them for the fans.

George made the prequels for #1, money, and #2, his ego.

George didnt need to make the prequels. He made them for the fans. This thread has nothing to do with Star Wars anyway, I have no idea why people keep bringing it up. While we are on the subject I would like to mention that the prequels, so far, are significantly better than the original films but they don't have the nostalgia value which makes people think the originals are better. Truth is, if those originals were released for the first time today, with modern special effects they wouldn't be as well liked or remembered.

Wankers.

How can they evaluate the current market for adventure games if they dont release products.

Art should never be compromised for commercial pursuits.

More importantly, follow the advice they give. Send mails to LucasArts. Show your support for Sam & Max 2. Even if they don't "un-cancel" it, we will still have shown our contempt for their decision to cancel games that are actually shaping up to be good.

"GOOD? THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! WE CAN'T RELEASE A GOOD GAME! PUSH THAT STAR WARS GAME FORWARD 6 MONTHS! NOW!"

HAHAHA You think they make an adventure for IJ4? Why didnt anyone make a true LotR adventure yet then? They want to sell to the children, who are screaming to their parents "mommy I want dat game, so I can be Frodo and jump around like an idiot". They dont care at all to sit hours on one puzzle. They love to blow stuff up and jump around. I bet $200 that they will make another tombraider clone like Dantastic said. Or maybe even something simpler.

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

In the not too distant future
Way down at Lucasarts
Mike Nelson and his corporate pals
Were doing thier evil arts

They started a game called Sam & Max
A really good game, but they gave it the ax
The fans didnt like this, not one bit
So they clonked him on the noggin and they shot him into space
(Let me DOWWWN!)
We'll send him crappy Star Wars clones
The worst, we can find (LA LA LA)
He'll have to sit and play them all
And we'll monitor his mind

Now keep in mind Mike can't control
When the gaming begins or ends (LA LA LA)
He'll try to keep his sanity
With the help of his robot friends

ROBOT ROLL CALL
Cambot! ("Show yourself!")
Gypsy! ("I'm not ready!")
Tom Servo! ("Hello there!")
Croooow! ("That's one 'o'!")

If you're wondering how he eats and breathes
And other science facts (LA LA LA)
Just repeat to yourself it's just a show
I should really just relax for
Mystery...Bluesnews...Theater...2000!
(twang!)

Lucas had some issues with it and has decided to do the re-write himself

Well, based on the other crap that Lucas has written and directed recently, I can only wish that IJ4 is dead.

Spielburg may not have a flawless record, but it's a helluva lot better than Lucas's.

Indiana Jones 4 is dead. Lucas refused to sign off on the script for the movie - and no other work is taking place on the project.

Not entirely true... Spielberg loved the script, but Lucas had some issues with it and has decided to do the re-write himself. Due to his schedule, the tentative release date is now summer of '06.

Actually about a year ago I read an article in PC Gamer (I think) that had a list of the number of units particular games sold. The Longest Journey despite its' major critical acclaim...it had only sold about 15,000 copies in the first 8 to 12 months or so of its release. Im going from recollection, so the numbers may be off. But the point is even the "best" Adventure games have not been selling.

The Longest Journey didn't sell very well initially, but picked up substantially afterwards I believe. If they only sold 15,000 (which would have made it a major disaster of a failure), they wouldn't be writing a sequel which they are doing. I think that adventure games don't sell 9,000,000,000,000 overnight, thus publishers don't like them because they don't look good on a quarterly report. But they do sell.

They're not going to put out another IJ adventure. What makes you think they won't stop putting out the IJ tombraider clones?
