DOOM 3 April 15?

Doom 3 due April 15 on GameSpot reveals what they call the "official," albeit still not officially announced ship date for the PC version of id Software's shooter sequel, attributing this information to an insider at Activision. There is, however, a bit of uncertainty to the use of "may" in the statement "GameSpot learned that Activision may be planning to ship the PC Doom 3 on April 15," and id Software has long held "when it's done" as the release date for all their projects. They also report the release date for the Xbox version is not certain yet. Update: This story has been subsequently pulled without further explanation.

If so, it will mean George Lucas can make a new Star Wars movie in less time--with better effects, no crashes, playable frame rates, and a solid release date that never changes!

ID guy: Hi Activision people, we need those tax documents so we can have our taxes done by April 15th deadline.
Activision Guy: I’m talking to someone at ID! OMG, I’m gonna pee my pants. “April 15th?”
ID guy: Yes, the federal tax deadline is April 15th.
Activision Guy: Ok, I’ll take care of it.
ID guy: Fine. Bye. (click)
Activision Guy: ID…. April 15th. ID… Doom3. April 15th… Doom3. OMG OMG OMG!

I'm more excited about having the engine available than I am about Doom 3. As mentioned above, even recent games like Call of Duty are still using the Quake 3 engine to great effect, and the Doom 3 engine will likely be longer-lived than it is. If more games end up looking like Doom 3 (in terms of quality, not style), I'll certainly be happy. Real-time lighting, shading, and detailed physics all add quite a lot to the visuals of a game, and in turn add to your immersion and enjoyment.

But, of course, I'm not too worried about release dates and delays. I've got a job and friends that occupy plenty of my time already, and lots of other enjoyable things to do. It'll come out when it's ready (which is better than before it's ready), and I'll have a new toy to play with in my spare time, nothing more.

I agree 4 + years is a long time to develope a game. But I guess you must realize they are making a new game engine that has taken so long. Doom 3 was a tech demo turned into a game at the same time. Look how long the Quake 3 engine has been around, and it's still used in todays games. When Doom 3 launches it will introduce a wide range of better looking games to come in years.

Best Buy had pre-order boxes for Doom3 before Christmas. I'm somewhat skeptical that an ad for it in their flyer is anything more than an attempt by Best Buy to drum up more video card sales.

My question: is 4+ years going to become the norm for game development now? Just curious, so I can start saving now for Doom4 and HL3 in 2008.

"And They did run a DOOM 3 Ad in the best Buy paper this past weekend. I don't think they would spend $ now to a maket a game that would be delayed 6 months from now."

That is very true, good point. Now I do have suspicions

Wait! I just came to a new conclusion, what if Best Buy is marketting it for their own benefits without Id knowing? That can happen, can't it?

Maybe there is a Non-disclosure agreement that they had to take down- and perhaps we can expect a going gold official announcement soon. They already have the preorder boxes of DOOM3 at Best Buy. And They did run a DOOM 3 Ad in the best Buy paper this past weekend. I don't think they would spend $ now to a maket a game that would be delayed 6 months from now.

Yeah...that is horrible. Max Payne had the same problem...all those scripted sequences. It made the game absolutely terrible.

How the hell are there 154 reviews for Doom 3 on ebgames.com?

It has a 4 out of 5 rating from 154 people that have yet to play the game? Idiots.

these days the wait and see stance is the safest. And even if DOOM 3 comes out tomorrow, it is gonna be scripted sequence hell. Literally. THAT doesn`t excite me at all. I guess in some ways game devs can`t break the game making mold. I am gonna need a really good demo to sell me on this game. Far Crys demo ... now that`s a decent demo.

If Doom 3 is official for April, for me it's some hell of months coming up.

I seem to remember everyone raving about how great a year it was going to be last year, what with Half Life 2 coming out and Doom 3 etc.

Not to be pessimistic but im going to wait and see..

If this date is true then Painkiller and UT2K4 sales will be hurt quite a bit (UT2K4 slightly less). It's gonna be an expensive year, to bad some of these companies didn't take advantage of the dry desert that was gaming in 2003. Ah well, let god sort'em out
