Mythica Cancelled

The Mythica Website (thanks Mythica HQ) has word that Microsoft Game Studios has wrought Ragnarok on the upcoming MMORPG:
Based on a careful evaluation of the competitive MMORPG landscape, Microsoft Game Studios has decided to cancel the Windows-based game “Mythica.” As a result of this effort, job eliminations within Microsoft Game Studios will take place, and up to 40 employees may be impacted.

Adam Waalkes, studio manager at Microsoft Game Studios, stated:

Our goal with ‘Mythica’ was to create a truly innovative massively multiplayer online role playing game. While the game looked ready to deliver advancements to the genre, after careful evaluation of the MMORPG landscape, MGS has decided to stream-line its portfolio, making fewer investments in this genre. After a rigorous review of current and future projects, the decision was made that Mythica would not be one of the projects we would continue to invest in.

We truly appreciate all the support ‘Mythica’ has received from its fans and the games community.

That is a surprise... Why would MS *need* to cancel a game? It's not like profits are low.

Well, then again, most MS games *are* quite good... don't want to scar the reputation.

Why can't all these idiots realize that untill there's a major revolution in the HID department, mmo's are stuck like they are. Why don't you people create a decent device for virtual reality, create a game for it, and get rich.

I'm not talking steroscopic glasses, i'm talking direct player immersion. I'm sure if you geniuses can create useless things like glowing goldfish, you can create something like this. The game portion wouldnt even have to be great, just pump out some good graphics, physics, and some decent addiciting gameplay, and wahlah a revolution in entertainment.

God damn, hire me and i'll make the fucking thing!

This is a huge surprise. I've been reading their official forums for the past few months and the game looks very impressive. That's too bad, the devs were very proud of their work (as most are). Here's wishing the dev team the best of luck.

It doesn't bode well for the genre. They sold off Asherons Call too. Sounds like MS thinks the market is saturated.

It certainly seems to me like the market is canabalizing itself. The Sims Online and SWG failed to bring in the casual player like everyone thought they would. That leaves a lot of companies dividing a shrinking pie.

The second and third iterations of the genre have been "evolutionary rather than revelotionary." They've just refined the gameplay some what and in the case of SWG, they've "refined" the fun right out of it. Technology is going to have to take a few steps up before any real innovation occurs and before we see mass acceptance.

People looking for new MMOG's already have their picks, EQ 2 and WOW. Competing with these two giants by introducing a brand new game from scratch is a big risk. Sure they could pull it off and make the best mmog out there, but what are the chances of that happening? Unless they can come up with something revolutionary its not gonna happen. Not worth the risk from a business standpoint, I think they made a wise decision.

The market is just way too saturated. Everyone has jumped on the bandwagon!

The biggest problem for this genre is connection. Whether or not people want to admit it, the facts state that there are still a huge number of people that are using dialup.

What this means is that there is a really hard choice to make. Can you make your game run efficiently with hundreds of people in a small area through a modem? Yes, you can; what is it going to look like? Therein lies the problem.
As time goes on, the demand for better graphics increases.

What the genre needs is a restructuring of the way the internet works. The way the protocols are structured, the way the information is transferred, the way the system talks. This would allow the developers of all online games some greater flexibility!

I guess that means we have to wait for Al Gore to invent Internet2?

Hey, those glowing goldfish are badass. You are not allowed to knock the fish.

I'm not talking steroscopic glasses, i'm talking direct player immersion.

Like some sort of cranial jack then?? Kind of an awesome William Gibsonian gaming vision....I could go for that. Hell, most people who use the glasses alone get motion sick after fifteen minutes.

I thought there was an Internet 2....secluded to just universities and corporations, but I do swear remembering that the developing of it was started a few years ago.

There is an "internet 2." It currently is being developed by various universities and other professor types trying to make a name for themselves. However, we may never see the improvements within a timely manner. Now that the internet exists, you just can't turn it off and turn on the new one!

If you're interested, check out some of the stuff they're doing: (I think this is the official site)
http://www.internet2.edu/about/aboutinternet2.html

The amazing thing is that they recently transferred a terabyte of data (1,000 Gigabytes) over 4,300+ miles within 30 minutes. That is about 5.5 Gigabytes a second! How's that for some fast downloading!

Edit: Grammar, spelling, yada. I don't claim it's perfect, but it's not scribbles on dirt either.

I hate to see games get cancelled for marketing reasons. It's a bummer for the devs who probably spent years of their lives working on this. That being said, there is no way the market needs another fantasy based MMORPG. Between the existing franchises (EQ, DAOC, etc), and the upcoming (WoW), I don't where they thought Mythica would fit in. If you look at their faq, the thing they were touting that was betetr about tehir game was "Private Realms". Nice idea, but we are already seeing the elsewhere. There is a great future for MMORPS, and countless original settings, I wish there was more development in non-fantasy areas (as well as breaking out of the level treadmill model).

After seeing it at E-3 last year(even have a nice pic of me with one of the booth babes) I honestly wasn't impressed. It was to me a cross between WoW, DAoC and AC2. Yes the story being more integral if true would have been nice but honestly how many times have we in the press heard this canned line. I am wondering if the Mythic lawsuit had some small part to play. I doubt it did but what a coincidence. I think MS was seeing what many are seeing and that is a crowded market. I am doing the Lineage 2 beta and I am still active in DAoC and finally quit EQ, AC2 and AO. Folks like me that played many MMORPG's at one time and paid the 9.99-14.99 fees per month per game are not the rule. Most can't afford more that 2 a month maybe 3. Maybe they figured it wouldn't be economically viable for the 3-4 year long haul.
