Gandhi,

Here is the official T:V site - http://www.sierra.com/product.do?gamePlatformId=412

From that site:

Powered by an enhanced Unreal™ engine, stunning visuals take you into a never before seen chapter of TRIBES history.

Well, did some quick and brief research. It's being published by Sierra, so I can get the game when it comes out for $10 (my company has an employee purchase program with Sierra's parent Vivendi :D).

I also see it is coming out in October - at least that is what EBGames is reporting, and who knows how many times that date will slip and whether it will suffer delays or problems. Plus, I after playing the UT demo, I am getting impatient to try the full thing - I want my fraging action NOW!

Sounds to me like you should just wait for Tribes: Vengence

Hmmmm - I might consider doing that. Will look up more info on Tribes - any links or good reports?

Edit: and how active is the mod community for Tribes? Do they use the Unreal engine?

And develope jetpacks for onslaught mode - some interesting strategy twists there if done right. Not everone ones to jump into a flying vehicle in order to travers a whole map, you know

Sounds to me like you should just wait for Tribes: Vengence, as thats the game you describe above. You were able to skip over UT2K3 (which this, UT2K4, is a simple vehicle expansion of) so why not wait another 5 months or so.

I just played the SP demo for Painkiller (kicks ass) last night, that game will hold me over till HL2, Doom 3, SW: Battlefront and Tribes: Vengence comes out.

I just read that UT2004 will only ship with 9 onslaught maps and 6 assault maps. Is this true? Not enough maps

Well, I'm sure Assault maps take a lot more time to build than other maps...I'm hoping the community will pick up the ball and run with the Onslaught maps...

You're still talking about 15 maps, plus the other game types (DM, CTF, and BR)...

to compare UT2k4 onslaught to Halo. It feels a little like the larger maps in Halo w/ vehicles but sped up like a flashy arcade game. I'm going to preorder this game, good fun.

I think the speed doesn't allow for as much depth in gameplay as Halo does though. Or realsim, or teamplay tactics. You won't see people pull off impressive moves as often because of the simplified deathmatch mechanics(in whatever mode). Does that sound biased? Sure, but everyone plays the same in UT2k4 where as with Halo you remember even the slightly above average onscreen names because they have distinct personalities in game.

Not that Bungie couldn't learn a thing or two from Epic about games. Or that either one of them needs to learn from the other. I just might prefer it if they did.

On a side note, does anyone know of a command to display an in-game frame rate? This is driving me nuts.

I find driving in Halo to be a bit floaty - especially the buggy. The reactions for UT vehicles are bit more crisp and immediate, IMO.

Agreed--except for the Raptor. I love that thing, but its movement is too gradual. Frankly, for the difficulty it has in aiming at and damaging targets (those laser balls are weak...), the thing should at least be more responsive, especially when turning.

I just hope that they have a lot of maps for onslaught - anyone know the breakdown for how many maps each gametype will have?

Onslaught really surprised me...I went in not expecting much, and it really blew me away...

Been playing the demo off and onn all weekend, primarily team deathmatch and onslaught modes. The demo has me sold and I am really looking forward to the final release - especially since I skipped UT2003. I just hope that they have a lot of maps for onslaught - anyone know the breakdown for how many maps each gametype will have?

Of course I am also looking forward to the many mods and mutators that wil inevitably show up. Here's to a March release - one more month to go

because physics is physics is physics

I agree, you can't rip off physics. I do have to admit that onslaught is kind of cool, I played a bit this morning and had a couple of good laughs.

Halo's control is easier, but frankly, I can't see the vehicles being ripped directly from Halo, nor the physics, because physics is physics is physics. In the end, so long as you don't fuck up, you're always going to end up with physics that's essentially similar, because it's always going to be based on the same laws. Halo's vehicle feel is of much more powerful vehicles with less grip and fairly bouncy suspension. There's nothing especially terrible about the control, but it can get annoying to be looking one way to shoot and to get stuck on something you can't see.

It took me a bit of time (a few games) to get into Onslaught, but I'm sold on it as a gametype now, and there's a lot of room for mods to play around with it in interesting ways. I'm not entirely sure about the feel of Assault, but it also feels like there's something generallly wrong about the scale of stuff, so maybe I need to play with the FOV a bit.

I can't say I've even looked at CTF / DM / BR / TDM yet, but they were an enjoyable staple before, while the real problem was that UT2003 didn't pack any of the gametypes that would bring me back to it.
I'm getting a little miffed with the server browser always wanting to completely refresh the whole list when you fail to join a server, and that the user numbers don't take into account any spaces that are admin-reserved. It's annoying to have to go through the process each time for a server that says 19/20 yet doesn't really have a slot free. They're also going to need to sharpen up their master servers.

Still, overall I'm positive about it.

blatantly ripped off Bungie's vehicle designs and physics.

On top of that I think Halo's vehicle control is much better. I know when I first played Halo MP vehicle control was w->accelerate, s->brake/slow down and mouse to steer. Was very easy to pick up. The mouse movement in UT2K4 sends my PoV all over the place disorienting me when using the vehicles in UT2K4. Maybe there are settings to change this but as it stands the vehicle control in Halo is much better than UT2K4.

I would say most likely the inside of the manual cover where it displayed your CD-Key. They haven't released the information as to how it will be done, just that they were going to offer a rebate, which is great!

How do you get the rebate ?Do you have to send in a disk or some proof of purchase ?I'm enjoying the demo and I will get the game when its out.
